The Boston Red Sox season has been nothing short of surprising. They came into the year with high expectations, but have underperformed so far.
The Red Sox are 42-44 and three games back of a wild card spot, entering play on Tuesday. While they can still make a postseason push, MLB insider Mark Feinsand revealed that if they do not get on track soon, they could end up giving up on the season and become sellers.
“The Red Sox have enough payroll flexibility to make some additions before the Trade Deadline, and while they’re hanging around the Wild Card race despite a record lingering around .500, there are some who believe Boston could become a seller if they don’t play better in July,” wrote Feinsand.
The Red Sox have already traded away Rafael Devers this season. On paper, that move alone would signal an incoming fire sale. However, Craig Breslow remained adamant that the team was not waving the white flag on the season. He even noted that he thought trading Devers would be a move that helps the team win more games.
That has not been the case so far, but there is still time for the Red Sox to turn things around. They have plenty of young talent, but they are going to need some of their veterans to step up. Getting Alex Bregman back from injury will also be key.

Bregman was hitting .299 with 11 home runs before his quad injury. The superstar third baseman will have to be a major part of any late push for the postseason, but he will need to get back on the field to actually contribute. The only question will be whether his return will come too late.
