Red Sox could change Rafael Devers’ position again in shocking move

The Boston Red Sox’s offseason was highlighted by their controversy about who would play third base. After signing Alex Bregman, the Red Sox eventually made him the everyday third baseman and made Devers the third baseman.

However, even though the third base situation was settled, Devers could end up changing positions again. Triston Casas has struggled to start the season and FanSided’s Michael Brakebill suggested that Devers could earn some time at first base as a result.

“Optioning Casas to Triple-A Worcester may be a real possibility soon, but it will become an even more significant possibility if Mayer hits his stride,” wrote Brakebill. “He is hitting just .200 in Triple-A but has appeared in games at 2B, 3B, and SS. Sending Casas down could open a spot for Rafael Devers to get some playing time in the field again as a 1B, giving way to multiple players to take a stab at DH, including Mayer, if he can prove he’s ready.

Casas is 3-for-61 to start the season and has just one home run. He was expected to be a huge piece of the team’s offense. He has three minor league options left and could be sent down to make room for Mayer.

Devers playing first base is not a new concept. During the offseason, there were rumors of the Red Sox trading Casas and moving Devers to first base, so that they could sign a player like Bregman.

Moving Devers to first base would also open a spot for Masataka Yoshida, who was the designated hitter last season. Currently, when he returns, he will have to play in an already crowded outfield, and he is not an elite defensive player.
