Red Sox could already be regretting recent trade decision thanks to Tanner Houck

The Boston Red Sox recently made a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, which they may regret after Tanner Houck’s latest blow-up start. The Red Sox traded Quinn Priester to the Brewers last week, and he has shown out for his new team.

Priester has allowed just one run in two games with his new team, spanning 10 innings. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning on Tuesday night as well. Meanwhile, Houck allowed 11 earned runs in 2 1/3 innings of work on Monday. Houck was an All-Star in 2024, and he will likely bounce back. However, his poor outing is a microcosm of the inconsistencies in the Red Sox’s rotation.

Walker Buehler has a 5.23 ERA, Sean Newcomb has a 4.97 ERA. Brayan Bello, Kutter Crawford, Lucas Giolito and Richard Fitts are also on the injured list, which only adds to the problem.

The Red Sox did get a good return for Priester. The Brewers sent outfielder Yophery Rodriguez, a 2025 Competitive Balance Round A Draft pick and a player to be named.

Rodriguez was the No.7 prospect in the Brewers organization and he is the No.11 prospect in the Red Sox organization now. That is a great return for a player who was in Triple-A and had a 6.23 ERA at the time of the trade.

However, Priester’s early success with the Brewers makes one wonder if the Red Sox made a mistake. He will not be a free agent until 2031 and may have just made himself a key piece on a postseason contender.
