One of the Boston Red Sox’ top priorities this offseason is to try to retain their superstar leader, Alex Bregman. However, there may be another contender to take his place on the roster.
According to The Athletic’s Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox have been connected to the Toronto Blue Jays’ World Series hero and two-time All-Star, Bo Bichette.

“Retaining free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman is a priority for the Boston Red Sox. But some with the club view Bo Bichette, previously a division rival with the Toronto Blue Jays, as an intriguing alternative. Bichette, who turns 28 in March, perhaps cannot match the clubhouse presence of Bregman, who is one of the game’s leading mentors. But Bichette is four years younger and his wRC+ over the past six seasons is nearly identical to Bregman’s. Bichette’s was 21 percent above league average, Bregman’s 24 percent,” Sammons and Rosenthal wrote.
This past season, Bichette slashed .311/.357/.483/.840 with 44 doubles, 18 home runs, and 94 RBI in 139 games played. Bichette’s bat would also be upgraded in Fenway Park, as he could abuse the Green Monster for even more extra base hits as a righty.

With the theoretical acquisition of Bichette, that means the Sox would be out on Bregman. They would put rising star Marcelo Mayer at third base, Bichette at second, and keep Trevor Story at shortstop until his contract runs out.
This way, the Sox become even younger, and have most of their team on the same timeline. If the Sox start to lose in the Bregman sweepstakes, this is definitely an avenue they need to pursue.
