The Boston Red Sox added some talented players to their roster early this offseason, signing Aroldis Chapman, Justin Wilson, Walker Buehler and Patrick Sandoval in free agency and acquiring Garrett Crochet and Carlos Narvaez in trades.
However, things have slowed down recently, leaving Red Sox fans wanting more from their team, especially after they claimed that the offseason would be a big one for the club.
If Boston isn’t going to add another impact player (Alex Bregman, Nolan Arenado, etc.), they need to at least get some extensions done.
The Red Sox have plenty of options to sign to longer deals at the moment with Crochet probably being the highest-priority. He’s on the books for $3.8 million this year and will have one more year of arbitration before free agency. Boston should be looking to buy out at least three of those free agent seasons if not more considering Crochet’s potential and the price they paid to bring him in.
Tanner Houck and Jarren Duran should also be near the top of the list. Houck has two years left of arbitration after 2025 and Duran has three years of team control after agreeing on an option deal for next year this offseason.
It also might be a good idea for the Red Sox to consider locking down Roman Anthony or Kristian Campbell early on deals now before they reach the majors and potentially break out.
The team needs more news to drum up excitement because while they may have gotten better over the last few months, many were expecting more. At least extension news would show that they’re spending money.
