The worst-kept secret around Major League Baseball is that the New York Yankees are interested in trading for Nolan Arenado. When Arenado is on the field and playing at the top of his game, he’d be the perfect addition for the Yankees.
However, he’s very expensive, and he’s aging.
If the Yankees could get a deal done before the trade deadline, some believe New York will do just that. The Yankees have been looking for a third baseman over the better part of the past year, and he’d be the best one available, unless another superstar becomes available over the next few months.
However, a recent report suggests that the Yankees have to be careful.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Boston Red Sox were in “deep” talks with the St. Louis Cardinals on a trade for the future Hall of Famer.
“The Boston Red Sox were deep into trades talks and on the verge of acquiring Nolan Arenado from the St. Louis Cardinals until Alex Bregman dropped into their laps,” Nightengale wrote.

The Yankees don’t have to worry about the Red Sox anymore, but this is a good indication that other teams around the league will show interest in trading for the veteran.
Arenado has a no-trade clause and has already used it to avoid a deal with the Houston Astros earlier in the offseason.
Still, if he isn’t happy with how the Cardinals are playing over the next few months, he could be willing to accept a trade to a team other than the Yankees.
If that happens, New York would have to find a different solution, with not many options on the market.
