After the Boston Red Sox agreed to terms on a one-year deal with former Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Walker Buehler, they needed to open up a spot on the 40-man roster.
According to Beyond the Monster’s Hunter Noll, the Red Sox did just that on Tuesday, sending catcher/infield prospect Mickey Gasper to the Minnesota Twins for minor-league reliever Jovani Moran.
Gasper, 29, was originally a 27th-round pick of the New York Yankees in the 2018 MLB draft before Boston selected him in the 2023 Rule 5 draft. He made his MLB debut in Boston in 2024, however, he failed to record a hit in 18 at-bats. With Triple-A Worcester in 2024, Gapser was incredible, hitting .367 with a 1.062 OPS, eight home runs and 36 RBIs.
Moran, 27, was a seventh-round pick of the Twins in the 2015 MLB draft, and he debuted with the club in 2021. He missed the entire 2024 season after having Tommy John at the end of 2023. In 91 innings over 79 big-league appearances, he’s posted a 4.15 ERA, 1.330 WHIP and 10.2 K/9. If he’s back, healthy and pitching like he did in 2022 (2.21 ERA in 40 2/3 innings), he could be an interesting addition to the bullpen in 2024 and beyond.
