The Golden State Warriors need to add some defense. To compete for an NBA championship, they’ll need to get Draymond Green some help, and the current free agency market has some slim pickings.
Sam Amico of Hoops Wire reported that while the Warriors have been linked heavily to Al Horford and De’Anthony Melton, there are a few other players that have been on the Warriors’ free agent targets list.
“More on Golden State radar? Beyond those two, the Warriors have also kept tabs on Malcolm Brogdon, Trey Lyles, and Gary Payton II. Additional names surfaced during Summer League conversations, including Seth Curry and Ben Simmons.”
A Warriors-Ben Simmons signing would certainly be controversial. Adding another player to the roster who has no shooting ability would hurt the Warriors’ already bad spacing.
That being said, the potential of Simmons has enticed many teams before. Are the Warriors going to fall for it as well?
While he hasn’t lived up to the superstar-level hype he started his career with, Simmons has turned into a decently productive player. Especially on the defensive end.
The Los Angeles Clippers put him in for about 16.4 minutes per game last season, and he helped contribute to their elite defense. Simmons also scored 2.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in his limited playing time.

If Simmons wants to play a very limited bench role for the Warriors, he could be a real weapon. The Warriors could use him to help lock down some of the league’s top players. Just don’t expect him to shoot the ball.
