Real Oviedo vs. Real Madrid final score: La Liga result, highlights, stats as Kylian Mbappe hits double

Kylian Mbappe’s excellent brace inspired a 3-0 win for Real Madrid over a dogged Real Oviedo in La Liga.

As in their opening 1-0 win over Osasuna, Madrid did not have things all their own way at a raucous Estadio Carlos Tartiere, where the Oviedo faithful were celebrating their first home game back in the big time after an incredible journey back from financial ruin.

Veljko Paunovic’s side showed immense discipline and it took a wonderful turn and finish from Mbappe to break the deadlock.

The game remained in the balance until the final 10 minutes, with Kwasi Sibo hitting the outside of the post for Oviedo.

That close shave sprung Madrid into action, with Vinicius instrumental in setting up Mbappe’s second.

The Brazil winger started on the bench alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold as his compatriot Rodrygo was given a surprise start. And Vinicius added to his assist with a neat finish deep into stoppage time.

Real Madrid vs. Real Oviedo live updates, highlights, and commentary

Fulltime

We’re all done. Oviedo were a credit to their fans and head coach Veljko Paunovic. The game was in the balance until the class of Mbappe and Vinicius told down the stretch. It’s not all been plain sailing but that’s two wins from two and no goals conceded for new Blancos boss Xabi Alonso. Thanks for joining us.

90+2 minsGOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Vinicius Jr!!!!

Vinicius wraps things up. Madrid lethal on the break again and Vinicius slots home a lovely finish.

89 mins: Santi Cazorla, 40 years young, is about to come on for Oviedo… Oh and Hassan draws a fabulous save from Courtois! That was travelling and only a brilliant stop down to his left form Courtois prevented a grandstand finale.

87 mins: Ceballos on for Mbappe, while Alexander-Arnold replaces Carvajal for the last knockings.

85 mins: Mbappe fires one first time from the edge of the box and Escandell adds to his fine body of work this evening with a sharp save. Vinicius then dives into a challenge in slighly rash fashion for a man on a yellow card.

83 minsGOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Kylian Mbappe!!!!

Madrid react to that warning shot by putting the game to bed. Vinicius tears at the heart of the home defence and lays off for Mbappe to finish clinically.

82 mins: Oviedo hit the post! A methodical move ends with Sibo taking aim from outside the box, his drive hitting the outside of the upright.

80 mins: Vinicius cutting into the box and goes to ground… he’s booked for diving. Much to the entertainment of the locals.

77 mins: Madrid still can’t shake Oviedo. Tchouameni gets up to meet a left wing corner but his header is straight at Escandell.

66 mins: A botched Oviedo short corner gives Madrid a chance to break. The work it nicely. Vinicius and Brahim combine to find Valverde busting into the box. Excellent save from Escandell.

63 mins: Rodrygo makes way for his compatriot. He doesn’t look especially impressed and shares a terse hug with Alonso. Brahim comes on for Mastantuono too.

60 mins: Oviedo have regrouped effectively since the restart and there’s not been too much encouragement for Madrid. Vinicius will be joining us shortly.

Kickoff: 2nd Half

We’re back underway and Mbppe is back out there. Nothing to worry about on the injury front, it seems.

Halftime

Hard toil for Madrid but they lead through a fine Mbappe goal and he seems to have run off that little injury issue from a few moments ago.

42 mins: Concern for Madrid here as Mbappe is limping a little.

37 minsGOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!! Kylian Mbappe!!!!

It had been coming and that’s classic Mbappe. Tchouameni snaps into a challenge on halfway that will be checked. Guler spins a pass into Mbappe, who turns and clips a wonderful shot across Escandell into the far corner.

36 mins: My word, who haven’t Madrid scored? Rodrygo round the outside and drills across goal. Escandell pushes out but Guler has the goal at his mercy. Luengo makes a brilliant block on the line.

34 mins: Lovely, searching ball into the box from Guler that a lunging Mastuantono just can’t get on the end of.

30 mins: Oviedo work the ball into the Madrid half and are on the attack. The atmosphere is electric. Rondon can’t outmuscle Tchouameni and concedes a free-kick.

28 mins: Rodrygo tries his luck again but is crowded out and Dendoncker gets the block in.

14 mins: Mastantuono goes barrelling through the Oviedo defence and goes down in th area under pressure from Calvo but there’s no penalty. Hmmmm, definitely seen them given.

3 mins: Rodrygo, enjoying a rare out in his favoured left-wing berth, cuts into the box smartly and forces Escandell to tip around the post. Oviedo deal with the corner.

Kickoff: 1st Half

Away we go and Oviedo almost catch Madrid out with a ball over the top straight from kickoff. Courtois had to be alert.

5 mins before kickoff: Here come the teams. An electric atmosphere at the Tartiere.

40 mins before kickoff: Salomon Rondon reads the line for Oviedo. The great Santi Cazorla is on the bench.

1 hour before kickoff: Well, here’s some team news. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Vinicius Junior are benched by Xabi Alonso. Dani Carvajal and Rodrygo, the latter who has been linked with a move away from Madrid over recent weeks, each start. Argentine youngster Franco Mastantuono is also in from kick-off.

Real Madrid vs. Real Oviedo lineups, team news

Real Oviedo’s squad sheet is looking a little thin heading into Sunday’s clash. Álvaro Lemos is sidelined with injury, while the likes of Santiago Colombatto, Jaime Seoane, and Lucas Ahijado are all nursing knocks that leave their availability hanging by a thread.

There is some good news, though—David Costas returns after serving his suspension. On the flip side, Alberto Reina is forced to sit this one out following his red card in the defeat to Villarreal, leaving Paunović with another hole to patch in defense.

As for the lineup, there’s unlikely to be much tinkering. The home side is expected to stick to the familiar formula, with veteran forward Salomón Rondón once again leading the line as Oviedo look to cause a famous upset.

Real Oviedo starting XI (4-1-4-1, right to left): Escandell (GK) — Luengo, Costas, Calvo, Alhassane — Sibo — Vidal, Ilic, Dendoncker, Chaira — Rondon

Real Oviedo subs: Moldovan (GK), Bailly, Cazorla, Vinas, Hassan, Colo, batto, Ejaria, Brekalo, Fores, Gueye, Falah, Esteban

Real Madrid’s injury list remains stacked, with Jude Bellingham, Ferland Mendy, Endrick, and Eduardo Camavinga all still stuck on the sidelines.

There is a boost for Xabi Alonso, though, as Antonio Rudiger returns from suspension after missing the Osasuna clash.

The head coach made a few eye-catching selection calls, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Vinicius Junior benched. Dani Carvajal, Rodrygo and Franco Mastantuono all start.
