Real Madrid’s €80M hunt for Newcastle United star triggers three-club transfer standoff

Real Madrid are reportedly looking to pursue Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali and may kick off what could be a three-way battle for the Italian midfielder signature this summer.

According to Fichajes, Madrid want to bring Tonali to the Santiago Bernabeu as they look to refresh their aging midfield. With Toni Kroos gone and 39-year-old Luka Modric nearing the end of his career, the Spanish champions need new blood in the middle of the park. But they’re not alone in their interest. Both Barcelona and Manchester City are also eyeing the 24-year-old star.

Newcastle have been adamant that they have no plans to sell Tonali. Sources close to the club say they want at least €80 million before even considering a sale, a figure that would give them a profit on the €70 million which they reportedly paid to AC Milan for Tonali in 2023.

Given his current form, it’s not surprising to learn that major clubs are vying for his signature. For Barcelona’s coach Hansi Flick, it would add experience to his young midfield, while Manchester City view Tonali as a potential replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, with Pep Guardiola also reportedly admiring the Italian’s versatility and reliability in central areas.

For Real Madrid, despite having Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Dani Ceballos at their disposal, Carlo Ancelotti believes Tonali brings a unique profile that could elevate their midfield to new heights.

Tonali is under contract with Newcastle until 2028 and with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City lurking, it will interesting to see what transpires next.
