Real Madrid vs. Real Sociedad live score: Copa del Rey result, updates, stats as Endrick starts and scores

Real Madrid seek just their second spot in the Copa del Rey final across the last decade as Los Blancos host Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabeu for the second leg of their semifinal matchup.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side hold a 1-0 aggregate advantage thanks to a 19th-minute goal from young striker Endrick in San Sebastian a month ago.

With Madrid also battling for the La Liga title as well being matched up with Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, it’s a busy finish to the 2024/25 season for the Spanish giants, but they wouldn’t have it any other way.

Real Sociedad, meanwhile, sit middle of the league table, meaning this competition is their best chance to savor success through the final few months. La Real are seeking their second Copa del Rey title in recent years, having also triumphed in the 2019/20 final over Athletic Club.

Real Madrid vs. Real Sociedad live updates, highlights from Copa del Rey

57th min: The right foot of Fede Valverde is causing the Uruguayan problems, as he appears to have been stamped on when landing after a header. He’s in a bit of pain, but treatment gets him fit enough to continue.

47th min: Aramburu heads the ball straight into the path of Jude Bellingham, and Alex Remiro flails wildly at it, managing to get a necessary touch to safety while also smacking Bellingham in the face. Real Madrid want a penalty for the incident, and their protests are understandable, but the referee waves play on.

2nd half kickoff: They’re back under way at the Bernabeu with no changes for either side.

HALFTIME: Real Madrid 1-1 Real Sociedad

The scoreline of this match is level but it’s Real Madrid who have the aggregate advantage at the Bernabeu as halftime beckons.

The hosts have been happy to concede possession and work off the ball for much of the first half, especially after Endrick’s equaliser, and Real Sociedad haven’t just knocked it around. There has been life from La Real as they poke and prod Real Madrid trying to find an opening, but they have yet to make good on it.

Real Madrid have, as always under Carlo Ancelotti, looked exceptional on the counter-attack, and that will be where Real Sociedad are most vulnerable. An intriguing second half is on the horizon!

45+3 min: Takefusa Kubo goes down under a challenge from Vinicius Jr. just inside the top of the penalty area, and in fairness there’s a lot of wrestling going on above the waist, but the referee waves play on. There’s a check by VAR, but it’s not determined to be a clear and obvious error, and the check is completed quickly.

42nd min: Real Sociedad have enjoyed long spells of possession since the Real Madrid equaliser. The hosts have been happy to let them have a lot of the ball, confident in their ability to keep a lid on it and play on the counter.

30th min: GOAL! REAL MADRID! Just like that, Endrick puts Los Blancos back in front on aggregate with a vicious counter-attack!

It’s far too easy as he breaks from the halfway line and Vinicius Jr. finds him at full speed behind the Real Sociedad defender. He collects the ball, takes one touch onto his left, and chips it deftly over the goalkeeper for the finish! An absolutely devastating move and sublime result!

Watch in USA:

27th min: The visitors have an issue here as Nayef Aguerd, who has only just returned from an injury suffered before the international break, has gone down and will need to be substituted. He’s oozing frustration as he comes off the pitch, and is replaced by Artiz Elustondo.

16th min: GOAL! REAL SOCIEDAD! WHOA! THE TIE IS LEVEL OUT OF NOTHING!

Real Sociedad have had nothing going forward to this point, but out of nowhere, Pablo Marin flicks a header on to Ander Barrenetxea down the left at pace. The 23-year-old winger finds himself behind Lucas Vazquez who’s caught way too high up the pitch, leaving him to cut in on goal and finish the chance from a tight angle!

We’re all square on aggregate at 1-1! What on earth was Raul Asensio doing flying forward all the way into midfield???? He put Vazquez in a terrible position!

Watch in USA:

10th min: Chance, Real Madrid! Vinicius Jr. cuts onto his right foot and shoots from about 12 yards out, forcing a huge save by Alex Remiro! The Real Sociedad netminder dives acrobatically to his left to palm the effort away!

8th min: Chance, Real Madrid! OH MY ENDRICK! He almost scores a truly absurd bicycle kick, but puts it just wide! In a bout of ingenuity, the young Brazilian is one-on-two with a pair of defenders, and while kicking the ball up in the air, he turns his back to the goal and rifles a spectacular strike, but it just misses wide right!

Kickoff: They’re under way at the Bernabeu! One of these teams will find themselves 90 minutes from a trophy at the end of this one!

Real Madrid vs. Real Sociedad: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

15 mins to kickoff: Real Madrid striker Endrick has four goals in four Copa del Rey games this season. Only one player in the competition’s history has more goals in their first Copa season: Cristiano Ronaldo. Can he make history?

30 mins to kickoff: Real Sociedad advanced the last time these two clubs met in the semifinals of the Copa del Rey, back in 1988, but this time they’re in an early 1-0 hole. In this position, the club has never progressed. They’re up against history today.

45 mins to kickoff: Today could be an important 90 minutes for David Alaba, who has quietly been working his way back to his best from a torn ACL. He has seemingly been passed by young Raul Asensio, who has been excellent this season while Alaba gets back to full fitness.

Today, he starts alongside Asensio. The priority is of course to give regular starter Antonio Rudiger some rest, but for Alaba, he can show he still remains a strong starting option as they head to the later stages of the season and into 2025/26.

1 hour to kickoff: Real Sociedad’s lineup is in, and they are happy to welcome Nayef Aguerd straight back into the lineup after suffering an injury just before the international break.

Also back into the XI is left-back Jon Aramburu, whose inclusion shifts Aihen Munoz over to the right.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: The loss of Brais Mendez has been felt at Real Sociedad. He was a monster for Real Sociedad in the attacking third, receiving oodles of progressive passes (93rd percentile of all European midfielders this season) and converting that into chances (83rd percentile for shot-creating actions).

While his loss doesn’t appear to have affected the La Real attack, as they’ve managed to score goals, what it has done is open them up at the back. This is because the injury forced Martin Zubimendi to move higher up the pitch, which leaves a gaping hole through the middle.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: Jude Bellingham has been one of the most underrated players in Europe this season. With Real Madrid adding Kylian Mbappe, his goal production was always going to drop, and that has made it look on the surface like he’s regressed.

It’s been anything but regression. He’s still the world’s best midfielder, able to do just about everything a midfielder can be asked to do at an elite level. He’s a top-tier dribbler, ball progressor, passer, and defender. He can’t do all of them at once, but whatever Carlo Ancelotti asks him to do on a given night, he will excel at it.

Bellingham says he will be hoping to stay at the Spanish club for a very long time.

1 hour 45 mins to kick: In classic Real Madrid fashion, their starting lineup is already out, and there are a few tweaks, though only one we weren’t expecting.

As expected, Endrick comes back into the side and gives Kylian Mbappe some rest. David Alaba also comes into the back line to give the overworked Antonio Rudiger some time off, and gets himself some much needed minutes after falling back to third in the central defensive pecking order.

The one surprise is seeing Eduardo Camavinga at left-back, where he has played before but only sparingly. Fran Garcia is rotated out, while Ferland Mendy is out injured.

2 hours to kickoff: While Carlo Ancelotti has been able to lean heavily on his dangerous superstar trio up front this season, he also has a young, talented striker in Endrick who has waited patiently for his opportunities. After Ancelotti’s faith in the 18-year-old paid off in the first leg of this semifinal, with Endrick scoring the eventual winner early on, there are rumblings that he could turn to the youngster again for the second leg as well.

It’s not clear who would sit out if Endrick does indeed start. For the first leg, both Kylian Mbappe and Rodrygo were rested, as Ancelotti also started young Arda Guler in that match.

Real Madrid vs. Real Sociedad lineups, team news

Real Madrid saw goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois return from international duty with a muscle injury. It was initially hoped the problem was minor, but he had to miss the weekend win over Leganes in La Liga and is set to sit out this game, too.

Dani Ceballos and Ferland Mendy are also struggling with hamstring injuries and will be targeting the upcoming Champions League match next week for their return. Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal remain out for the season with serious knee injuries.

Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo came off the bench to good effect on Saturday and return to the lineup. Carlo Ancelotti has left Lucas Vazquez in at right-back, while switching out Fran Garcia on the left for some rest, with Eduardo Camavinga deputising in that spot.

Real Madrid starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Lunin (GK) — Vazquez, Asensio, Alaba, Camavinga — Valverde, Tchouameni — Rodrygo, Bellingham, Vinicius — Endrick.

Real Madrid subs (9): F. Gonzalez (GK), Mestre (GK), Vallejo, F. Garcia, Rudiger, Modric, B. Diaz, Guler, Mbappe.

West Ham loanee Nayef Aguerd sustained a hamstring injury before the international break, but he has been included in the squad for the visit to the Santiago Bernabeu and surprisingly starts. However, winger Sheraldo Becker and midfielder Arsen Zakharyan will not be involved.

Real Sociedad suffered a big blow in mid-February when playmaker Brais Mendez suffered a broken metatarsal in his foot, leaving him out for most of the rest of the season, if not the entire remaining campaign.

Luka Sucic missed international duty with an injury but trained with the team and is in the starting lineup.

Real Sociedad starting lineup (4-1-4-1): Remiro (GK) — Munoz, Zubeldia, Aguerd, Aramburu — Zubimendi — Kubo, Sucic, Marin, Barrenetxea — Oyarzabal.

Real Sociedad subs (11): Marrero (GK), Oskarsson, Elustondo, J. Lopez, Olasagasti, S. Gomez, Traore, Turrientes, Martin, Mariezkurrena, Diaz.
