It was far from pretty, but Real Madrid ground out a victory at home to begin the La Liga season, beating Osasuna on a Kylian Mbappe penalty shortly after halftime.
Last year’s Pichichi winner got off to a strong start, winning the spot-kick and taking it himself to preserve the win.
Madrid struggled throughout the match to break down Osasuna’s low block, but there was Mbappe to rescue the side.
New starlet Franco Mastantuono made his Real Madrid debut off the bench in the second half, but he nor anyone else save Mbappe were able to lift Madrid in the attacking third.
Osasuna were reduced to 10 men in the final seconds of the match as Abel Bretones was given a straight red for elbowing Gonzalo Garcia.

Real Madrid vs. Osasuna live updates, highlights from La Liga opener
FULLTIME: Real Madrid 1-0 Osasuna
Real Madrid were nowhere close to expectations, but they managed to secure three points thanks to Mbappe’s penalty. Xabi Alonso preached defensive solidity, and in that regard they were strong — Osasuna had absolutely nothing.
81st min: Chance, Real Madrid! Kylian Mbappe has a hit from a tight angle on the left, but Herrera has the near post covered!
72nd min: Chance, Real Madrid! Aurelien Tchouameni heads just over the crossbar!
68th min: Franco Mastantuono is on for his Real Madrid debut! He replaces Brahim Diaz, who was largely ineffective. Dani Carvajal also comes on to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has had some muscle issues to begin his Madrid career.
50th min: Penalty, Real Madrid! As he did so many times last season, Kylian Mbappe takes care of the Madrid attack all by himself, drawing a blatant foul in the bottom-corner of the penalty area and the referee points to the spot!
The Frenchman takes it himself, and…GOAL! MADRID! He calmly slots it into the net with the goalkeeper going the wrong way!

2nd half kickoff: They’re back under way at the Bernabeu. What started as an exciting affair with Real Madrid electrifying the crowd with a strong work rate has devolved into a grueling stalemate. Can Xabi Alonso work his magic to get Los Blancos going?
HALFTIME: Real Madrid 0-0 Osasuna
This match stinks. Not much more to say, really. Madrid look baffled, and when they have managed to get a look on goal, the shots have flown wide. Vinicius has been just as isolated as he was last season, and Kylian Mbappe gets triple-teamed every time he gets on the ball.
Osasuna have been effective in their low block, and while they’ve looked somewhat dangerous on the counter-attack, nearly all of their moves have been cut out before reaching the final third as Real Madrid track back very well.
Let’s hope Xabi Alonso makes some halftime adjustments, for all our sake.
31st min: They’ve reached the cooling break. There’s been very little action thus far.
26th min: Now Eder Militao forces a save from Sergio Herrera with a shot from distance. The two best chances for Real Madrid so far have been long-distance piledrivers from their two center-backs, which tells you just how little they’ve created to this point. It’s not been a thrilling performance so far.
18th min: Osasuna are bunkered in and trying to prevent Real Madrid from finding an entry feed into the penalty area. It’s largely succeeded so far. That forces Dean Huijsen to try his luck from distance, and he produces a knuckler that forces Sergio Herrera into an awkward save down to his left, but he’s up to the task.
12th min: The Bernabeu has applauded a few moments of real quality pressing by Xabi Alonso’s men. This is something we didn’t see at any point under Carlo Ancelotti. Even the forwards are getting up for pushing Osasuna off the ball, and the crowd appreciates the effort.
7th min: Chance, Madrid! Real Madrid have controlled the early passages of play, and they have their first sight of goal as Alvaro Carreras takes aim at the far post but drags a shot wide across the face of goal! The space to shoot was there!
Kickoff: A new season is officially under way at the Bernabeu!
Real Madrid vs. Osasuna: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more
15 mins to kick: Incredibly, Real Madrid have gone 16 seasons without losing their first league match of the season, dating back to 2008 when they fell to Deportivo La Coruna 2-1 on opening day. That’s the longest streak of any Spanish club!
30 mins to kickoff: Real Madrid have a lot of pressure on them this season. Thanks to the struggles of last season, the heat is on from the very beginning for Xabi Alonso to get results. Blancos fans were not pleased with the complete lack of trophies last year, seeing even a legend of the club in Carlo Ancelotti out the door. Alonso will have some time to work his project, but the fanbase has high expectations. It starts today.
45 mins to kickoff: There is a player in the Real Madrid lineup many may not be familiar with, as Alvaro Carreras is deployed at left-back. The 22-year-old joined Real Madrid’s youth setup at nine years old, but departed in 2020 for Manchester United. After loans at Preston, Granada, and Benfica, he joined the latter on a permanent deal for just €6 million. That proved to be a masterstroke, as he would be flipped back to Real Madrid for €50 million just 18 months later, an incredible investment for the Portuguese club.
With Ferland Mendy still injured, Carreras slots right in at the position, and will hope to make the spot his own for the full season ahead.
1 hour to kickoff: Lineups are in! It’s exactly as we expected for Real Madrid, with Brahim Diaz in on the wing and Federico Valverde wearing the captain’s armband in midfield. Gonzalo Garcia will have to wait for his chance to play in La Liga even with how exceptionally he performed this summer in the Club World Cup.
For Osasuna, head coach Alessio Lisci has opted for a conservative setup, especially on their left as defensive-minded winger Abel Bretones is deployed along the front line. Summer signing Valentin Rosier, who joined from Leganes on a free transfer, starts at right-back, while former Real Madrid player Victor Munoz takes up a spot on the bench.
1 hour 30 mins to kickoff: With so many changes to the Real Madrid roster, there are a lot of questions to be answered by Xabi Alonso this season. Most of those questions eventually come back to how Alonso plans to get more even production out of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, who struggled to play together for much of last season.
While Mbappe flourished, winning the league’s Golden Boot award, Vinicius struggled, largely because the two occupied similar spaces. The emergence of Gonzalo Garcia at this summer’s Club World Cup plus the likely departure of Rodrygo could give Alonso an answer — play Garcia through the middle, move Mbappe to his natural left wing, and flip Vinicus to the right. Yet Vini hasn’t proven he can excel on the right just yet.
If Alonso believes young Garcia isn’t ready for a full-time starting role yet, there may be other short-term options he can take, like using Brahim Diaz more. We will get some answers today, hopefully.
2 hours to kickoff: Today will be the first chance to see Xabi Alonso coach in La Liga. He showed a glimpse of his tactical flexibility at the Club World Cup, deploying a number of formations both by need and preference. It will be interesting to see how he structures this team without both Jude Bellingham and Luka Modric.
3 hours to kickoff: Reports at the end of last season indicated that Jude Bellingham needed shoulder surgery, and the club pushed him to put it off until after the Club World Cup. That left Bellingham out for a number of weeks to begin the league season, as the surgery was expected to come with a three-month recovery.
However, the latest reports seem to claim that his recovery is progressing faster than expected and he could be available sooner than thought. Multiple Madrid-based journalists have been cited as claiming he is recovering well.
🚨 Jude Bellingham’s recovery is progressing very well. The club is very satisfied with the improvement in his condition, and they even believe he is capable of recovering faster than expected.

Real Madrid vs. Osasuna lineups, team news
Alonso’s plans have been impacted by a reduced preseason and a host of injury concerns, including Jude Bellingham, who is out for three months after shoulder surgery. Real Madrid opted to have Bellingham do his surgery after the Club World Cup, meaning he will be out for a number of weeks to begin the league season.
Real Madrid starting lineup (4-3-3): Courtois (GK) — Alexander-Arnold, Huijsen, Militao, Carreras — Guler, Tchouameni, Valverde — B. Diaz, Mbappe, Vinicius Jr.
Real Madrid subs: Lunin (GK), Mestre (GK), Carvajal, Alaba, F. Garcia, Asensio, Ceballos, Rodrygo, Mastantuono, Thiago, G. Garcia.
Osasuna narrowly missed out on the European qualification spots at the end of last season and Alessio Lisci has bolstered his squad over the summer.
Victor Munoz has joined from Real Madrid’s youth ranks and was thought to be in contention for a swift debut against his old club, but instead takes up a place on the bench. There is a debut, however, as right-back Valentin Rosier starts after joining from Leganes on a free.
Osasuna starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Herrera (GK) — Rosier, Boyomo, Catena, Cruz — Torro, R. Garcia — Moncayola, Oroz, Bretones — Budimir.
Osasuna subs: Fernandez (GK), Stamatakis (GK), Herrando, I. Munoz, Raul Garcia, Barja, M. Gomez, V. Munoz, Mauro, Osambela, Chasco.
