Real Madrid vs. Leganes live score: La Liga result, updates, stats as Mbappe Panenka is cancelled out by Garcia

Real Madrid resume their title defence in La Liga today as Leganes visit the Santiago Bernabeu.

Los Blancos came into this latest matchday with a three-point deficit to Barcelona at the top of the standings, with city rivals Atletico Madrid four further points behind. With 10 rounds still to play, the title race in Spain is one of the most gripping across Europe.

Leganes are themselves desperate for whatever good result they can get. They sit 18th in the standings heading into this weekend, occupying the final relegation spot, although they are level on points with Alaves and just one behind Valencia and Espanyol. Aside from rock-bottom Real Valladolid, La Liga’s relegation battle is similarly tough to predict.

Real Madrid vs. Leganes live updates, highlights, and commentary

33 mins: GOAL! LEGANES ARE LEVEL! What a response from the visitors! A quick move down the right sees Valentin Rosier race clear and pull the ball back to Juan Cruz. His shot lands straight at the feet of Diego Garcia, who taps in from point-blank range. And he was played onside by Fran Garcia.

32 mins: GOAL! PANENKA FROM MBAPPE! An impudent finish right down the middle takes him to 21 La Liga goals for the season.

30 mins: PENALTY TO REAL MADRID! Arda Guler is taken out by Oscar Rodriguez and the referee points to the spot. Leganes are furious as they think Rodriguez got a touch on the ball, but he certainly took out the man. Mbappe will take it…

27 mins: Dmitrovic receives some treatment after appearing to hurt a finger as he nudged Mbappe’s shot from a tight angle past the far post. He will be okay to continue.

23 mins: Good chance for Modric! Fran Garcia makes inroads down the left and crosses for Bellingham, who touches the ball back to the captain. His shot is blocked over the crossbar by Sergio Gonzalez.

15 mins: Bellingham picks up a loose ball in the Leganes half and tries to play in Brahim Diaz, but he is forced a little wide inside the penalty area. Renato Tapia covers well to block the cross behind, and Modric’s corner is a poor one.

11 mins: Marko Dmitrovic is called upon for the first time, sticking out a leg to clear Luka Modric’s low ball across the box. That came from Jude Bellingham threading a pass through the packed visiting defence for the first time.

5 mins: No surprise to see Madrid enjoying the early possession, but Leganes have so far defended their final third very well.

Kickoff: First half

Here we go!

22 mins before kickoff: Not long til kickoff now. This feels like a big game for Madrid: fail to win, and Barca could suddenly take a stranglehold on the title race.

42 mins before kickoff: Here come the hosts. I’m not sure if Endrick had been expecting to play, or if he’s just tired from the return trip from South America (which would be fair enough), but he does not exactly look enthused here…

1 hour 5 mins before kickoff: And we have our Leganes team! The good news for the visitors is that striker Daniel Raba is fit to start despite coming off in the 3-2 loss to Real Betis with an injury concern.

1 hour 35 mins before kickoff: Earlier today, Atletico Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Espanyol despite largely dominating the game at RCDE Stadium. Should Barcelona win tomorrow, Atleti will be nine points behind the leaders with nine games remaining. That feels like too a big a gap to bridge at this stage of the season.

1 hour 50 mins before kickoff: Real Madrid’s lineup is already out! Never change, guys, never change…

Andriy Lunin starts in goal, while Lucas Vazquez and Fran Garcia are at full-back. There are also starts for Luka Modric, Arda Guler and Brahim Diaz, with Brazilian trio Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo and Endrick all on the bench.

2 hours before kickoff: The top title race in the top five leagues resumes today. Atletico Madrid have already done their bit against Espanyol; now, it’s over to Real Madrid. As Carlo Ancelotti said this week: “We’re coming into the closing stretch of the season. Every game could be decisive.”
