Real Madrid set to secure Benfica defender after Lisbon holds firm on €50 million clause

Real Madrid are closing in on the signing of Alvaro Carreras after weeks of tense negotiations with Benfica.

The Spanish giants have finally agreed to meet the Portuguese club’s €50 million [$57m] release clause, as reported by MARCA.

Carreras, 22, cropped up as Madrid’s top left-back target in late May after coach Xabi Alonso raised doubts over Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia, but despite agreeing personal terms for a five-year deal early on, Los Blancos struggled to convince Benfica to lower their price.

According to a few reports, Madrid initially offered between €35 and €40 million [$39m- 45m], but Benfica refused to budge.

With the Club World Cup deadline looming on June 10, Real Madrid have moved fast. The club wants Carreras registered as their third summer signing, following the arrivals of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen.

But Benfica were initially reluctant to lose the left-back ahead of their own Club World Cup campaign. However, Madrid’s insistence and the player’s determination have tipped the scales.

Once the agreement is signed, Benfica will officially confirm the full transfer details, including possible bonuses.
