Real Madrid make captaincy decision after Modrić and Vázquez exits

Two of Real Madrid’s captains have left the club this summer, with Luka Modrić joining AC Milan and Lucas Vázquez still looking for his next move.

New manager Xabi Alonso had to decide on who to promote to the captaincy group.

Real have a policy of giving their longest-serving players the honor of the armband, which has given two players the chance to now join the group.

Who are Real Madrid’s new captains?

As reported by Diario AS, Dani Carvajal has been named captain of the squad. Carvajal has been with Real since his youth stages.

Carvajal has been part of the senior squad since 2013, and after the departures of Modrić and Vázquez, Carvajal is the longest-serving player.

Behind Carvajal is Federico Valverde, who will wear the armband when Carvajal is not on the pitch.

Valverde has been a staple in the Real squad since 2018, when he made his debut for the first team.

The Uruguayan had 10 goal contributions this season, and he constantly raises the level of Real Madrid’s team.

The third captain of the group is goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who arrived at the club in 2018.

Courtois has shown his incredible leadership skills, and the goalie is not afraid to speak his mind. Courtois has recently extended his contract with the club.

The final member of the captaincy group is Vinicius Junior, despite the forward having failed to agree on a deal for a new contract.

Along with Valverde and Courtois, Vinicius came into the club in 2018 and has shown great goal-scoring potential.

The Brazilian’s future is unclear for now, but should his three co-captains fail to take the field at the same time, the armband will fall to Vinicius.
