Real Madrid may have spent heavily to boost their defence this summer, but questions still remain inside the club, over whether their new-look backline is good enough to carry them through a full season.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alvaro Carreras have been added to improve the full-back positions, with 20-year-old Dean Huijsen landing as a long-term centre-back prospect, but there is concern inside Valdebebas that it might still not be enough.
The reason appears to be simple with Real Madrid’s defence exposed at times last season particularly at key points with Eder Militao and David Alaba injured.
Over the last two years, Alaba and Militao have only managed a combined 31 appearances, which has forced Real Madrid into uncomfortable situations at the back.
While Antonio Rudiger held things together during the injury crisis, there are doubts about depth and reliability, with the Germany also struggling for fitness.
Raul Asencio is still considered too raw, with the season expected to be long and intense, and Real Madrid feel they may need one more centre-back to be safe.

Los Blancos want to sign William Saliba or Ibrahima Konate this season. Arsenal are not interested in selling Saliba, who is under contract until 2027, and the Gunners are looking to extend his contract.
Konate has not agreed to a new contract with Liverpool. It is still difficult for Real Madrid to sign him because the Reds are asking for a very high fee.
Real Madrid identify a cost effective alternative
According to Fichajes, Sevilla centre-back Loic Bade has emerged as a strong alternative for Xabi Alonso.
The 25-year-old Frenchman has quietly become one of the most consistent defenders in La Liga, impressing with his ability to read danger early, his physical presence in duels and his comfort on the ball.
Real Madrid are confident he can fit into Xabi Alonso’s vision, especially with the team planning to play a higher line next season.
Bade’s €25m [$29m] valuation is another major factor in his favour, compared to Saliba or Konate, who will exceed over €70m [$80m] if Arsenal or Liverpool decide to sell.Â
Bade’s familiarity with Spanish football, and the fact he already plays alongside Kylian Mbappe in the France national setup, make him an even more logical fit in Alonso’s revived squad.
