The Tampa Bay Rays have been quiet this offseason, with their only move being the signing of catcher Danny Jansen to a one-year deal.
However, on Wednesday, the Rays added a key piece to their mix. Super utility man Ha-Seong Kim has been a free agent for quite some time, and though he’ll be delayed to start the 2025 season, the veteran’s free agency lasted a while.
According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Rays are signing Kim to boost their offense for 2025.
“Infielder Ha-Seong Kim and the Tampa Bay Rays are in agreement on a two-year, $29 million contract that includes an opt-out after the first season, sources tell ESPN,” Passan tweeted. “Kim is coming off shoulder surgery but is expected to return in May and slated to take over at shortstop.”
This is a solid move for the Rays. Kim provides power from the right side of the plate when he’s healthy and could add some much-needed pop to Tampa Bay’s lineup.
The 29-year-old hit just .233 with 11 home runs and 47 RBI. Perhaps his production could have been compromised by his ailing shoulder. He hit 17 home runs in 2023 and had a .260 average.
The veteran also gives the Rays elite defense in the infield. He can play three of the four infield positions and is a former Gold Glove award winner.
He could give the Rays some help at second base, shortstop and third base this season as they look to bounce back from missing the postseason.
We’ll see how this move impacts the Rays going forward.
