Ravens free agent pitch adds $49M guard to improve Lamar Jackson’s protection

The Baltimore Ravens went into the offseason with questions surrounding the future of their offensive line, as left tackle Ronnie Stanley, left guard Patrick Mekari and backup guard Josh Jones were set to hit free agency.

While they re-signed Stanley to a three-year, $60 million contract, Mekari left for a three-year, $37.5 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Jones signed for $4 million over one year with the Seattle Seahawks.

If the season were to start today, Baltimore would likely have 2023 seventh-round pick Andrew Vorhees, who played 268 snaps last year, as their starting left guard.

However, the Ravens still have options, including signing a capable veteran. In fact, NFL Trade Rumors’ Logan Ulrich recently named Baltimore as a top landing spot for veteran guard Brandon Scherff.

Scherff, 33, was a first-round pick (No. 5 overall) of the Washington Commanders in the 2015 NFL draft after five years at Iowa where he earned All-Big Ten honors twice and All-American honors once.

The former Hawkeyes lineman started 140 games over seven years in Washington, making five Pro Bowls and one All-Pro team.

Scherff inked a three-year, $49.5 million deal with the Jaguars in 2022 and started all 51 possible games at right guard. Last year, Pro Football Focus graded him as the 53rd-best tackle in football with a 64.7 overall grade. He was also ranked 19th in pass blocking (74.5) and 97th in run blocking (57.3).

Signing Scherff wouldn’t be the perfect fit for Baltimore, considering he’s played 8,856 of his 8,858 career snaps at right guard (two at right tackle in 2022), but they could make it work.

The veteran would either flip to the left side for the first time in his career, or he could slide in at right guard and have Daniel Faalele move to left guard and get snaps at a fourth position in four years. It’s not ideal, but having Scherff in the mix is better than going into 2025 with the current group.
