The Baltimore Ravens have a questionable situation at linebacker with Trenton Simpson.
Simpson became a starter in 2024, but things did not go well. The former third-round pick started the first 13 games of the campaign before he was benched for poor play. One of his replacements, Malik Harrison, is no longer on the team.
Ahead of 2025, head coach John Harbaugh revealed that Simpson will indeed start next to Roquan Smith, but after what happened last season, it’s hardly a guarantee Simpson keeps the job all season.
If the Ravens are smart, they’ll bring in reinforcements. Granted, the team did draft a linebacker in Teddye Buchanan in the fourth round, but he’s not guaranteed to be ready to contribute on defense in Year 1.
One possible solution could come in the form of someone the Ravens already know well. Last Word on Sports’ Anthony Palacios suggests the team reunite with former first-round pick, C.J. Mosley.
The Ravens are in dire need of a linebacker since they lost Malik Harrison during free agency. Roquan Smith and Odafe Oweh are solid defenders, but the same can’t be said about Trenton Simpson. Mosley won’t last long in the NFL anymore, but the Ravens could bring back an old friend to finally push for the Super Bowl in the Lamar Jackson era.
Mosley spent the first five years of his career in Baltimore, where he became an elite linebacker after four Pro Bowl and four second-team All-Pro nods.
He parlayed that into five-year, $85 million deal with the New York Jets in 2019. Things did not go smoothly for Moseley in New York, though. He played in just two games his first season due to injury and opted out of 2020 due to COVID.
Mosley did manage to rebound in 2022, grabbing his fifth-career Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro nods, but his tenure with the Jets ended after a 2024 season where the 32-year-old played in just four games due to injury.
Mosley isn’t the elite linebacker he once was, but he’d still offer a strong insurance policy for Simpson, as well as someone who can help defend the run.
When it comes to signing any free agent, price will be paramount for the Ravens, who have just $10.1 million left in cap space. However, with Mosley’s age and coming off a down season, he should be right up Baltimore’s alley price-wise.
