Raptors could add franchise-altering point guard to young nucleus via trade

The Toronto Raptors should look at the Chicago Bulls’ willingness to trade one of their star point guards as a ripe opportunity for them to solidify what’s shaping up to be a fruitful rebuild.

The Raptors have a nice young core in place. Toronto is led by forward Scottie Barnes, whose triple-threat versatility has him on the brink of All-Stardom. RJ Barrett could follow suit in short order with his electric offensive play. Gradey Dick is a dynamic jump shooter in the league and Immanuel Quickley stands as a polished scorer and outside shooting marksman. Yet, they lack a standout floor general, which they could address in a trade with Chicago.

The Bulls are currently fielding teams interested in star point guard Coby White. The Raptors may fit the Bulls’ bill based on a recent report divulging what the latter franchise seeks in return for the North Carolina product:

“Noise is growing louder around the Bulls going all-in on a full-scale rebuild, which could include trading Coby White,” Forbes’ Evan Sidery reported on Wednesday afternoon.

“White is valued highly by Chicago, but they appear open to listening to trade offers as he would net the most significant return of any player on their roster.”

White finished as runner-up for the Most Improved Player of the Year award last season. The 6-5 talent possesses great athleticism and shot-creating abilities. He currently averages 18.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per game and owns a 36.8 percent clip from the three-point line for his career.

Able to blow by defenders in the open and half court, White could bring speed and pace to a Raptors team designed to run and gun. If his career continues on the pace that it’s on, he could further burgeon as a scorer and distributor.

The 24-year-old is under contract for $12 million this year and $12.88 million next season. Thus, Toronto could compile a package of players including stout defender Okai Agbaji, and Davion Mitchell, along with future draft picks, to make the money work on a trade and compensate Chicago with the building blocks for their likely overhaul.
