Rangers, Mike Sullivan get record contract update in head coaching search after Penguins departure

Mike Sullivan hasn’t been separated from the Pittsburgh Penguins for more than a few days.

But it already sounds like the NHL head coach might be lining up his new home.

The New York Rangers and Sullivan are deep in contract talks, according to ESPN insider Emily Kaplan.

Kaplan reports that the deal is “expected to be one of the richest coaching contracts in NHL history.”

Sullivan coached 10 seasons in Pittsburgh, winning back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 2016 and 2017.

The Penguins haven’t made the playoffs in any of the past three seasons.

The Rangers are looking to replace Peter Laviolette after he was fired following a miss of the postseason.

Sullivan has a long-ago Rangers connection.

He was drafted by the Rangers in 1987, but he never actually played for them. He carried on his career at Boston University and wound up playing for four other NHL teams.

Sullivan was also on the Rangers staff as an assistant under John Tortorella from 2009 to 2013.

And now, it sounds like Sullivan may soon have his new home in a familiar place.
