Few teams in the NHL had a more disappointing season last year than the New York Rangers, one could argue they were the biggest underperformers in the league.
And no Rangers player faced more scrutiny for it than forward Mika Zibanejad. The 32 year old Swede faced a steep regression, producing only 20 goals and 42 assists for 62 points in 82 games last season. This is a far cry from the 90 plus point player he was in his prime with New York only a couple seasons ago.
The 14 year vet is entering what will be his 10th season in New York this upcoming year. It will be the 4th year of an $8.5 million per season contract he signed after the 21-22 season, that theoretically makes him a Ranger until 2030. With that said as the Rangers look to undergo a change in identity, they have reportedly attempted to trade Zibanejad despite the no-move clause he carries via insider David Pagnotta.
What do the Rangers do with Zibanejad?
The dilemma the Rangers face with Zibanejad is that the player does not share the same interest that they do in regards to a potential move. Meaning, it is highly improbable that Mika waives his NMC. It appears the Rangers are stuck with Zibanejad and will be forced to find a way to make the situation work in the meantime.
The Rangers hope last season was a one off for Zibanejad and that he is due for a bounce back in this 25-26 campaign. To be fair Zibanejad was not the only Ranger to regress last season, many of his teammates share the same expectations of having a stronger performance this year.
New York will need more from Zibanejad and company if they are to return to the playoffs in 2026. If struggles persist, the noise around his future with the Rangers won’t go away.
