Raiders’ Jakobi Meyers gets $10.76 million contract issue with trade request news

There must be some kind of commutative property of wide receiver trade requests.

On the same day that the Washington Commanders and Terry McLaurin agreed to a contract extension to end his drama, the Las Vegas Raiders and Jakobi Meyers have entered the fray.

Meyers has reportedly asked to be traded, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

“The team, citing his value, said they had no plans to do so,” Rapoport wrote on X. “Meyers and the team attempted to negotiate a new contract, but could not come to terms.”

Meyers is due to make $10.76 million this season in the final year of his current contract.

The 28-year old wide receiver has done very well for himself already in his NFL career. He went to North Carolina State as a quarterback, and he was undrafted out of college.

Meyers stuck with the New England Patriots and made an impact right from the start.

He has spent the past two seasons with the Raiders.

Meyers is coming off his best NFL season, catching 87 passes for 1,027 yards and four touchdowns in 15 games played despite working with some mediocre QBs.

This season has the potential to be even bigger for Meyers, now that Geno Smith is in town. But the outlook for his campaign has entered into some serious uncertainty.

If Meyers misses time, it makes rookie Dont’e Thornton Jr. even more important. Thornton was already pushing for a big role even with Meyers on the field. Tre Tucker is the other top wideout who could see more targets if Meyers misses time.

The Raiders already would’ve planned heavy reliance on tight end Brock Bowers, but that could rise too if Meyers is out.

He’s likely right in principle that he’s worth more than $10 million this season. But as has been shown throughout this offseason, negotiating from the position of already having a contract can lead to quite the stalemates.

The Raiders have a chance to be pretty good this season. They might have to bite the bullet and compromise here to make sure Meyers is on the field for Week 1.
