Paris Saint-Germain continued the dominance by Champions League winners in the UEFA Super Cup as they lifted the early-season trophy with a penalty shootout win over Tottenham after a 2-2 draw.
The result comes on the heels of a remarkable comeback, as PSG were largely second-best for much of the game. A new-look Spurs side led by Thomas Frank was exceptional for much of the game, with defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero both scoring set-piece goals to steal a 2-0 lead early in the second half.
Deploying a surprise 3-5-2 formation, Frank baffled the opposition for the first 70 minutes, with new signing Mohammed Kudus looking especially bright up front. Yet eventually the Europa League winners ran out of gas, and Luis Enrique’s substitutes changed the match.
After a long spell of intense PSG pressure where Spurs sat deep, Lee Kang-in started the comeback with a rifled effort from outside the box in the 85th minute. Then it was Ousmane Dembele’s cross to the head of Goncalo Ramos that brought PSG back level and forced a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Spurs again squandered an early lead, as Vitinha’s first-take miss gave Tottenham an advantage out of the gate. Yet they would capitulate again, as van de Ven’s effort was saved by new PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, and Mathys Tel missed to allow Nuno Mendes to win it from the spot.
The victory for PSG means the Champions League winner has now triumphed in 12 of the past 13 UEFA Super Cup matches, a streak of dominance that betrays the gulf in competition between the two European tournaments.

Tottenham | O | O | X | X | O |
PSG | X | O | O | O | O |
Round 1:
Tottenham — Spurs will shoot first down the end where their supporters are, as Dominic Solanke steps up to begin the shootout. He…SCORES! It’s a looping effort placed in the top-right corner, with Lucas Chevalier guessing correctly but unable to reach it!
PSG — First for PSG is Vitinha who has been talked about in the Ballon d’Or conversation. The midfielder…MISSES! The slow, dramatic run-up (if it can even be called that) never had conviction, and it’s sent wide!
Round 2:
Tottenham — To give Spurs a two-goal advantage early in the shootout is Rodrigo Bentancur, and he…SCORES! The Uruguayan smashes his effort inside the left post, and again Chevalier guesses correctly but cannot reach the shot!
PSG — Looking to put PSG on the board is Goncalo Ramos, who scored the late equaliser, and he…SCORES! It’s a rifled effort straight under the crossbar, and he chirps the Spurs fans behind the goal in the aftermath.
Round 3:
Tottenham — Next up for Tottenham is Micky van de Ven, who opened the scoring today. The Dutchman’s effort is…SAVED! It’s a horrible effort, without any pace or precision, and Chevalier dives to his left to make a comfortable stop! PSG have a reprieve!
PSG — Next up for PSG is Ousmane Dembele, who assisted the equaliser, and he…SCORES! The Frenchman sends Vicariou the wrong way and deposits his effort into the net! It’s a crafty one as his run-up was straight-on and didn’t betray which foot he would use.
Round 4:
Tottenham — Here is Mathys Tel for Spurs, and the Tottenham substitute…MISSES! It’s wide left! Lucas Chevalier guessed incorrectly for the first time in the shootout, but it’s missed the target after a stutter-step!
PSG — Looking to put PSG ahead in the shootout is Lee Kang-in, who started the comeback in the 85th minute. The South Korean…SCORES! Vicario dives the wrong way and the ball ripples the net!
Round 5:
Tottenham — Spurs defender Pedro Porro must score or the shootout is over. Porro…SCORES! It’s a wonderful penalty, placed perfectly into the top-right corner to force PSG to win it.
PSG — With a chance to secure the title, here is Nuno Mendes who…SCORES! PSG have won the UEFA Super Cup with a remarkable comeback!
END OF REGULATION: PSG 2-2 Tottenham
PSG have equalised at the death, and that means we will head to a penalty shootout! No extra-time in the Super Cup, meaning we’re now into a shootout to determine the winner!
Lucas Chevalier will be in the spotlight straightaway!

89th min: PSG have a big penalty shout as Ibrahim Mbaye goes over inside the left edge of the penalty area, but the referee waves play on for a goal kick. It’s never a penalty, and Ousmane Dembele is booked for his protests.
Pape Sarr is withdrawn as Thomas Frank brings on fresh legs in the form of Lucas Bergvall. Six added minutes are shown.
85th min: GOAL! PSG! The pressure had been building from the Champions League winners, and substitute Lee Kang-in scores a wonderful strike from outside the penalty area to bring PSG within a goal! Game on!
77th min: Luis Enrique throws on one more attacking substitution as Goncalo Ramos enters to replace Desire Doue. Minutes later Mathys Tel replaces Mohammed Kudus who had an exceptional competitive debut for Spurs.
71st min: Chance, PSG! Ousmane Dembele gets a cutback after strong work by Fabian Ruiz down the right, but the Ballon d’Or candidate rifles his shot well wide of the near post! It’s been a struggle today for Dembele who has not managed to test the Tottenham goal.
Spurs make a double change, as Dominic Solanke and Archie Gray come on to replace Richarlison and Joao Palhinha.
66th min: Chance, PSG! Bradley Barcola has the ball in the back of the net on a third attempt, after two previous PSG shots were turned away, but the flag is up for offside and the goal won’t count!
It’s his last action of the match, replaced by Lee Kang-in, while Warren Zaire-Emery comes off for young Ibrahim Mbaye. PSG are short-handed off the bench, with Senny Mayulu injured.
58th min: PSG have been so poor, and Spurs are nearly through again which forces William Pacho to absorb a clear yellow card as he drags down Pape Sarr about 28 yards from goal. Pedro Porro’s effort from the set-piece is very close to troubling Lucas Chevalier, but the ball is deflected wide in the end.
Shortly after, Luis Enrique makes his first substitution as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is withdrawn, replaced by Fabian Ruiz. This will see Desire Doue move up into a position on the wing with Ruiz into midfield.
56th min: There’s a huge penalty shout by Spurs as Pedro Porro goes down under a clumsy challenge from Nuno Mendes but nothing is given. It’s a very awkward tackle, but in the end there’s not much in the way of an actual foul.
Down the other end, Desire Doue is the first PSG player booked for a foul on Richarlison.
53rd min: The Tottenham fans thought for a moment they’ve gone 3-0 up as Kevin Danso nearly became the third Tottenham defender to score today, but it’s just into the side netting. Not far off!
Moments later, Richarlison is booked for delaying the restart after a foul.
48th min: GOAL! TOTTENHAM! Another goal for Spurs, and another for a defender on a set-piece as Cristian Romero makes it 2-0! This one is much simpler, as PSG completely lose the Tottenham captain at the back post with nobody to mark him, and the simple headed finish sees him poke the ball across the face of goal tucked in the side netting!
It’s incredibly poor from Lucas Chevalier as well, who sees the finish go right under both outstretched arms. He absolutely should have done better, and it’s certainly a good bet Gianluigi Donnarumma would have!
47th min: Chance, Tottenham! Richarlison is denied by Lucas Chevalier for a second time today! Another high turnover by Spurs and the Brazilian rips a shot on frame that’s turned away!
2nd half kickoff: They’re back under way for the final 45 minutes, with no substitutes for either side.
Being early in their preseason ramp-up thanks to the Club World Cup, it’s understandable that PSG may not be at full strength, but they have been poor so far in this match and are in danger of disappointment. Can they improve?
HALFTIME: PSG 0-1 Tottenham
It’s advantage Tottenham at the break as Micky van de Ven’s goal has the Premier League side deservingly in front!
Thomas Frank’s side is out-shooting PSG 9-4, with numerous chances generated by getting the ball behind Luis Enrique’s back line. PSG have had very little of their own, and will need to improve after halftime if they are to avoid suffering defeat to a Premier League club for the second straight trophy final.
45th min: Tottenham clatter the post yet again but the flag is raised for offside, meaning it wouldn’t have counted even if it had found the net.
39th min: GOAL! TOTTENHAM! Micky van de Ven pokes Spurs in front on a set-piece, and it’s no less than they deserve!!!
A deep free-kick is sent all the way over the penalty area to the far side where it’s headed back into the mixer. Van de ven challenges for the ball in the air, and it pings off his head into the path of Joao Palhinha who reacts quickly, smashing it off the crossbar from close range. It comes back to the Dutch defender who slides to put it into the net!

35th min: Chance, PSG! Ousmane Dembele ends up with a gift on the penalty spot, as a poor clearance off a cross from the right falls at his feet, but he lashes his shot miles over the crossbar! Even as the chance was unexpected, you’d expect a player of his calibre to do better with that moment!
23rd min: Chance, Tottenham! What a brilliant save by Lucas Chevalier to keep Spurs from scoring the opener! PSG turn the ball over in midfield, and Spurs break through Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison. The Brazilian goes for goal from about 22 yards out, but Chevalier, who is well out of his net, leaps high in the air to tip the ball over the crossbar!
An exceptional counter-attack only turned away by an ever more glittering save!

21st min: Spurs have not exactly troubled Lucas Chevalier on his PSG debut, but the Europa League winners have indeed been the better side thus far. They’ve managed the better attacking moves, and are out-shooting PSG 3-1 at the moment. The French side has enjoyed very little to savor in the attacking third thus far.
9th min: Chance, PSG! The Champions League winners have their first move forward into the Tottenham penalty area, brilliantly pinging the ball from individual to individual in a delicious one-touch move. Ultimately, it’s just missing the finish as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia spins and sends the ball weakly wide of the frame.
Spurs have been impressive thus far, but they still have defensive work to do against such eye-popping ball movement such as that.
Kickoff: They’re under way in Udine, as the Portuguese officiating crew signals the start of the match!

30 mins to kickoff: One of PSG’s most globally unheralded players last season was captain Marquinhos. The Brazilian defender has had a remarkable career, and remains one of the club’s most influential players. 45 mins to kickoff: Tottenham are huge underdogs in this match, with 11 of the last 12 UEFA Super Cups finishing with the reigning Champions League holder lifting the trophy. Yet if Spurs would like to find some bit of history on their side, look no further than the revelation that six of the previous seven Premier League clubs in UEFA Super Cup history won the title on their first attempt, with only Arsenal failing to do so in 1995.
1 hour to kickoff: Lineups are in, and there’s an interesting quirk on both sides.
For PSG, Gianluigi Donnarumma isn’t the only regular starter from last season who might be suddenly worried about their place in the team. Fabian Ruiz has also been dropped from midfield, replaced by Desire Doue in a very attack-minded lineup from Luis Enrique. Bradley Barcola moves into the attack to fill the gap.
On the other side, Tottenham boss Thomas Frank has deployed a 3-5-2 formation, with Kevin Danso added to the defensive line as a third centre-back. Richarlison and Mohammed Kudus are the two forwards up front.
1 hour 15 mins to kick: Today’s venue, the home of Italian club Udinese, is a unique venue. The roof is lined almost entirely with 2,409 solar panels that generate 3,000 kWh per day, 70% of which goes to the entirely self-sufficient stadium and the rest sent to outside sources.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: WhoScored has named a combined XI for the two sides today, and when it comes to pure statistical prowess, PSG are the dominant force in this match. Only Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario makes the lineup which is otherwise dominated by 10 PSG outfield players, and Vicario is likely only in the mix given Gianluigi Donnarumma’s exile from the French side.

1 hour 45 mins to kick: Ahead of today’s match, Tottenham have named defender Cristian Romero as the club’s new captain under Thomas Frank, with Son Heung-min having departed for MLS. It’s a real statement of dedication by the club for a player who at one point was rumoured to be leaving this summer.

2 hours to kickoff: Today, PSG will begin a new era as Champions League title winners, but also having moved on from superstar goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. They will roll out Lucas Chevalier who joined from Lille this summer, and whom manager Luis Enrique has chosen to lead the team.
It’s a bold and risky move by the manager, as Donnarumma is undoubtedly a top-five goalkeeper in the world, if not higher. Donnarumma’s future is the subject of great speculation, but for today the spotlight will be on his replacement.

PSG vs. Tottenham lineups, team news
Goalkeeping star Gianluigi Donnarumma, who played an enormous role in PSG’s Champions League triumph last season and has been at the heart of the club’s success in recent years, was left out of the squad for this match, indicating he could be on his way out amidst a contract dispute.
PSG spent big money on securing Lucas Chevalier this summer as a replacement in net, and much of the recent reporting indicates he is seen as the club’s No. 1 moving forward, with Donnarumma likely set for an exit.
Also missing for PSG is Joao Neves, who is suspended for this match as his red card in the Club World Cup final will carry over. Neves was sent off late in the game for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair in PSG’s 3-0 defeat, and Warren Zaire-Emery is preferred as the replacement over Senny Mayulu, who picked up a slight thigh injury. They do, however, get defender William Pacho back after he was suspended for the final two Club World Cup matches after a red card earlier in the competition.
Interestingly, Desire Doue has been deployed in midfield over last year’s regular starter Fabian Ruiz, with Bradley Barcola installed along the front line.
PSG starting lineup (4-3-3): Chevalier (GK) — Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes — Zaire-Emery, Vitinha, Doue — Barcola, Dembele, Kvaratskhelia
PSG subs: Safonov (GK), Marin (GK), Beraldo, L. Hernandez, Kamara, Ruiz, Mbaye, Ramos, Lee.
Tottenham’s seemingly endless injury struggles from last season appear to have carried over to the new campaign. Spurs lost James Maddison to an ACL injury in preseason, while Dejan Kulusevski and Radu Dragusin aren’t expected to be back from last season’s knee issues for another month at least.
There is some good news, however, as Dominic Solanke has been confirmed as available for the game, although he does not start. Destiny Udogie is not quite ready to return, though, and Yves Bissouma was left back at home for what the Spurs boss described as “disciplinary reasons.”
Frank will have to decide what his best attacking setup is throughout the season, with Brennan Johnson, Mohammed Kudus, Mathys Tel, Richarlison, and Wilson Odobert all in the mix for three or four starting spots. Today, he’s opted for an intriguing 3-5-2 formation with Kudus and Richarlison up top.
Tottenham starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Vicario (GK) — Romero, Danso, Van de Ven — Porro, Bentancur, Palhinha, Sarr, Spence — Kudus, Richarlison.
Tottenham subs: Kinsky (GK), Austin (GK), Davies, Byfield, Vuskovic, Gray, Bergvall, Tel, Johnson, Odobert, Solanke.
