PSG vs. Real Madrid final score: Champions League winners humble Blancos to reach Club World Cup final

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — Paris Saint-Germain made sure to show Kylian Mbappe what he was missing as the French giants humbled Real Madrid 4-0 in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup semifinal from MetLife Stadium on Wednesday.

A brace from Fabian Ruiz sandwiching an Ousmane Dembele strike, all in the first half, allowed PSG to cruise into the final where they will face Chelsea on Sunday. Substitute Goncalo Ramos deepened Madrid’s woes as he added insult to injury in the dying minutes of the game with PSG’s fourth.

Mbappe, who joined Real Madrid from PSG last summer, was all too quiet as his side was sliced to pieces up and down the pitch. Raul Asencio and Antonio Rudiger gifted PSG their first two goals with glaring on-ball errors, and Ruiz scored PSG’s third just 24 minutes in to cap off a devastating counter-attack.

Real Madrid were devoid of pressing ability or attacking incisiveness as PSG managed to beautifully pass their way through Madrid’s disjointed midfield, rapidly winning the ball back when they were dispossessed.

The defending UEFA Champions League winners were by far the best side all throughout, able to sit on their lead comfortably and keep a lid on Madrid’s feeble response.

Madrid’s capitulation marked the end of an era as well, as Luka Modric quietly played the final 30 minutes to close out his illustrious career at the Spanish side. Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao also made returns from long-term injuries off the bench, while Madrid’s exit marks the beginning of an absence for Jude Bellingham, who is headed for shoulder surgery now that they have departed the competition.

PSG vs. Real Madrid live updates, highlights from Club World Cup

FULLTIME: PSG 4-0 Real Madrid

The referee blows the full-time whistle as regulation ends, ending Real Madrid’s embarrassment early by adding no additional stoppage time.

It’s an utter demolition by PSG from start to finish, as the French giants thrashed Real Madrid across the entirety of the 90 minutes. Fabian Ruiz scores two goals, but it was a total team effort as every PSG player was better than his immediate opponent on the day. What a resounding result for Luis Enrique!

88th min: GOAL! PSG! The French giants are through to the final as Goncalo Ramos wraps it up! It appeared their breakaway had been thwarted when Bradley Barcola was dispossessed by the toes of a defender, but as PSG recycle they get it to Ramos with his back to goal and he turns before ripping a shot into the back of the net!

Luis Enrique goes berserk on the PSG sideline, and Real Madrid are set for further embarrassment!

87th min: Chance, Real Madrid! Eder Militao has a go from point-blank range, but there’s Gianluigi Donnarumma to wall him off!

85th min: Lucas Vazquez has come on for Real Madrid as Xabi Alonso waves the white flag. Real Madrid have displayed no sign of life through the final minutes of this match, and they appear happy to protect themselves from further harm.

71st min: And now Dani Carvajal returns from his lengthy knee injury as he replaces Gonzalo Garcia. Fede Valverde moves back into midfield, and Arda Guler goes out on the wing.

Then minutes later, Carvajal is booked. Welcome back!

63rd min: Real Madrid are making two important changes, even with the scoreline so lopsided. Luka Modric will come on for presumably the final 30 minutes of his Real Madrid career, while Eder Militao also enters to get his first 30 minutes of action after returning from a second ACL tear in the last year. Brahim Diaz also comes on.

Jude Bellingham comes off in his last action before shoulder surgery, and Vinicius Jr. is also withdrawn.

59th min: The game’s first change sees Goncalo Ramos and Bradley Barcola come on up front to replace Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, both of whom have run a ton. Luis Enrique can afford to save them for the final with the current scoreline.

53rd min: Chance, Real Madrid! Kylian Mbappe finds space atop the penalty area and rips a shot over the crossbar! It’s just Real Madrid’s fifth shot of the match, of which they’ve put just one on target.

51st min: Aurelien Tchouameni is down receiving treatment after a clash in midfield, but he’s able to get back up and continue.

48th min: Chance, PSG! Desire Doue has the ball in the back of the net after finishing off a two-on-one breakaway, but the flag goes up for offside! Ousmane Dembele had strayed off on the initial pass that sprung the leak.

2nd half kickoff: No changes for either side right now as they get the second half under way. Real Madrid will now have to take many more risks, meaning PSG can sit back and wait for their opportunities to pounce. Can Los Blancos mount an improbable three-goal comeback?

The passing disparity in the first half was 384-95 in favor of PSG. Real Madrid cannot suffer anything that lopsided again if they wish to challenge for a result.

HALFTIME: PSG 3-0 Real Madrid

That was as one-sided a first half as PSG could possibly have dreamed of in a top-tier matchup like this. The French giants tormented Real Madrid with their pressing, putting Xabi Alonso’s defenders under excessive pressure, while Real Madrid responded with 45 minutes of zero energy, excitement, or combination.

The only Madrid chances came from individual efforts of Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappe, all of which were ultimately snuffed out by their opponents before they can get quality shots off.

PSG are well and truly into the final unless Real Madrid mount some kind of magical comeback. Xabi Alonso was the engineer of many such situations at Bayer Leverkusen, but it does not feel as if this Real Madrid side has the same golden touch.

40th min: Chance, PSG! Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gets one-on-one with Raul Asencio and turns the Madrid defender, but his shot towards the inside of the far post flashes just wide!

39th min: Kylian Mbappe goes down in the penalty area under a tackle, and is writhing around in pain. The referee has deemed it a fair challenge, and Mbappe needs medical treatment. He gets up relatively quickly and seems ok, walking off under his own power and readying to continue.

In truth, it’s lucky for Real Madrid the referee stopped play to get Mbappe treatment, as PSG had a clear breakaway opportunity halted.

37th min: What a wild sequence. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, whose defensive work on the left wing is always underrated, takes the ball off Kyilan Mbappe and then nutmegs Arda Guler to begin a counter-attack. As he dribbles towards the Real Madrid penalty area, Jude Bellingham produces a thumping tackle and wins the ball cleanly, before screaming at his teammates to give more effort pressing.

28th min: Aurelien Tchouameni is booked for a foul that leaves Achraf Hakimi in a heap on the turf.

24th min: GOAL! PSG! The Champions League winners are carving Real Madrid to bits, and this one feels all but over! Achraf Hakimi gets behind Fran Garcia, and with acres of space dragging the center-back out, he slides it to Fabian Ruiz who bags his second of the match and PSG’s third!

23rd min: Kylian Mbappe snatches a pass from Ousmane Dembele and breaks down the left, getting past Achraf Hakimi before turning Marquinhos inside-out, but the Brazilian defender recovers in time to get a foot to Mbappe’s shot, looping it right to Gianluigi Donnarumma.

16th min: Vinicius Jr. has the best chance for Real Madrid so far as he gets behind two PSG defenders, but as he’s ushered wide of the left post, he swings and misses at the ball and can’t even get a shot off. The crowd groans.

15th min: Chance, PSG! Achraf Hakimi fires wide across the face of goal! Real Madrid have ZERO press and it’s showing, allowing PSG’s passing wizards all day to pick out teammates. Hakimi picks up the ball atop the right corner of the penalty area, and drags one just wide of the far post.

9th min: GOAL! PSG! ANTONIO RUDIGER GIVES IT TO OUSMANE DEMBELE AND IT’S TWO FOR PSG! It’s calamatous again from the Spanish side, as Rudiger just straight-up coughs it up to pressing machine Dembele. He’s free to charge forward on goal, and curls it by Courtois for a second!

It seems like Rudiger tried to pass it back to his goalkeeper, panicked, and completely whiffed on the ball!

8th min: GOAL! PSG! OH NO! REAL MADRID HAVE GIVEN IT AWAY AT THE BACK! Raul Asencio takes a heavy touch right in front of his own net, and Ousmane Dembele snatches the ball away! While Thibaut Courtois comes off his line to dispossess the Ballon d’Or candidate, he punches it to Fabian Ruiz who slots home in the empty net!

4th min: Chance, PSG! Fabian Ruiz is in acres of space inside the top-right corner of the penalty area, and as he shoots, Real Madrid are slow to react. He tries a left-footed curler, but it’s saved expertly by Thibaut Courtois!

Then Courtois makes an even more outrageous stop as Nuno Mendes was there to redirect a cross right on the mouth of goal but is stymied! The best goalkeeper in the world keeps this game level!

2nd min: Real Madrid have lined up exactly as expected, in a 4-3-3 with Vinicius Jr. on the right, Gonzalo Garcia through the middle, and Kylian Mbappe on the left. Vini gives away a short corner in the opening minutes, much to the chagrin of the pro-Madrid crowd.

Kickoff: They’re under way at MetLife Stadium! The second finalist will be determined, with Chelsea having already booked their place.

PSG vs. Real Madrid: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

10 mins to kickoff: According to reports, kickoff of PSG vs. Real Madrid has been delayed slightly. The match will start 10 minutes late, with reports claiming

15 mins to kickoff: If Real Madrid lose today, it would mark the final game for Luka Modric with the club. What a legendary career he’s had! The Croatia international will depart Real Madrid at the end of the tournament, reportedly set to join AC Milan next season.

Kickoff is minutes away!

30 mins to kickoff: Jobe Bellingham didn’t get to play a role in Borussia Dortmund’s quarterfinal clash against his brother Jude, but he’s in attendance today to cheer on Real Madrid now that his side has been eliminated from the competition.

45 mins to kickoff: Last night, Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos told The Sporting News about the Brazilian phenomenon known as “lei do ex” (pronounced “lay-doo-ayche”), or the “law of the former player.” After Joao Pedro terrorized his former club Fluminense yesterday at MetLife, can Kylian Mbappe make it two-for-two in the Club World Cup semifinals?

The Brazilians believe lei do ex to be a definitive and unavoidable law of the universe…

1 hour to kickoff: Today will mark the first time Kylian Mbappe plays against his former club PSG. The two sides remain embroiled in a court case to settle Mbappe’s departure from the club, as he claims PSG owe him €55 million in unpaid wages. That makes for an awkward reunion with the club that won its first Champions League title the year after he left.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: Lineups are in, and we’ve been treated to both Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele in the starting XI for the first time this tournament. Mbappe starts alongside Gonzalo Garcia and Vinicius Jr, which will be interesting to see how they arrange themselves up front — Vini could be moved to the right wing to accommodate the other two.

Unfortunately for Real Madrid, there’s also a surprise as Trent Alexander-Arnold is not in the squad thanks to muscle discomfort. That’s a big loss for Los Blancos, as they’ve already lost Dean Huijsen for this match due to suspension.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: If you’re wondering what kind of operation goes into hosting such a massive event at a venue like MetLife Stadium, The Sporting News has you covered.

We got a behind-the-scenes look at just what goes into such a gargantuan operation ahead of a massive, final-like match like PSG vs. Real Madrid.

1 hour 45 mins to kick: It’s expected that young Raul Asencio, who recently has lost the faith of Xabi Alonso after the signing of Dean Huijsen, will start today in place of the suspended Huijsen.

The Spanish media seems convinced that Alonso has been playing a back three, with Aurelien Tchouameni as the third center-back, but in reality, it’s more of a 4-4-2 diamond with Tchouameni often stepping up into midfield. At this point, he plays more of a midfield role than that of a defender.

Asencio seems unafraid to make mistakes, which is a positive, but mistakes today could be monumentally costly against such a quality opponent.

2 hours to kickoff: While the Chelsea vs. Fluminense match yesterday whet the semifinal appetite, this game is unquestionably the main course, with two of Europe’s most prominent and lucrative clubs squaring off.

The Sporting News is on-site at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ for this match to provide live updates, and we appreciate you following along!

PSG vs. Real Madrid lineups, team news

PSG will be without young defender Willian Pacho after his red card against Bayern Munich for a dangerous tackle on Leon Goretzka. It’s a big blow for PSG as their high press is backed up by his elite recovery abilities. Lucas Hernandez is also suspended after picking up his own red card in the match.

Star forward Ousmane Dembele returned from a thigh injury with two straight substitute appearances, scoring in the last round against Bayern Munich. He has been superseded by Bradley Barcola up front, but with Dembele returning to form and Barcola not producing, Luis Enrique returns to his regular front line used most of the season.

Otherwise, PSG have their full list of regulars available for action, a boon for the reigning Champions League winners who have steamrolled their competition throughout this season. Yellow card accumulation is wiped as we’ve reached the semifinals.

PSG starting XI (4-3-3, right to left): Donnarumma (GK) — Hakimi, Marquinhos, Beraldo, Mendes — Neves, Vitinha, F. Ruiz — Doue, Dembele, Kvaratskhelia.

PSG subs: Safonov (GK), Tenas (GK), Kamara, Zaire-Emery, Mayulu, Lee, Barcola, Mbaye, Ramos.

New defender Dean Huijsen, who has been fantastic at the back for Real Madrid since signing from Bournemouth, saw himself needlessly sent off for a last-man foul in stoppage time against Borussia Dortmund, meaning he is suspended for the PSG game. Raul Asencio steps in at centre-back, while Federico Valverde moves in to the right-back spot with Trent Alexander-Arnold out with muscle discomfort.

Kylian Mbappe has come off the bench in each of the past two rounds, but has given way to youth product Gonzalo Garcia, who has been brilliant in the France star’s absence, scoring in each of their two knockout games.

David Alaba and Ferland Mendy are still absent with their long-term injuries, while Dani Carvajal and Eduardo Camavinga are named to the bench for the first time and could make a return.

Real Madrid starting XI (4-4-2, right to left): Courtois (GK) —Valverde, Rudiger, Asensio, F. Garcia — Bellingham, Tchouameni, Guler — Vinicius Jr, G. Garcia, Mbappe.

Real Madrid subs: Lunin (GK), Carvajal, Militao, Vazquez, Enriquez, Ramon, Camavinga, Modric, Ceballos, Andres, Munoz, Martin, Rodrygo, B. Diaz.
