Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were outclassed and outgunned as Paris Saint-Germain cruised to a 4-0 victory and booked their place in the FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinals.
Much of the pre-match talk centred on Messi’s unhappy two-year spell in Paris and the possibility of revenge.
In truth, that was always a long shot given the gulf in quality between Luis Enrique’s European champions and Javier Mascherano’s MLS side.
Joao Neves was left unmarked to nod home a Vitinha free-kick inside five minutes and the Portugal midfielder had the first brace of his professional career when Bradley Barcola and Fabian Ruiz left a chance on a plate.

That 39th-minute goal sparked a complete collapse from Inter as Tomas Aviles put Desire Doue’s cross through his own goal and Achraf Hakimi got in on the act after his initial effort came back off the crossbar.
Fears PSG might run up a truly brutal scoreline were assuaged by Luis Enrique opting to rest some key men after halftime, with Ousmane Dembele back from injury to enjoy his first action of the tournament from the break.
Messi kept dutifully trying to make something happen for a buoyant crowd inside Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Arena. He drew a good late stop from Gianluigi Donnarumma with a header, by which point PSG’s attentions had probably turned partially to a quarterfinal showdown with either Bayern Munich or Flamengo.

PSG vs. Inter Miami live updates, highlights, and commentary
Fulltime
Well, that all felt charitable from PSG in the end. At halftime, it didn’t feel like we’d quite get to Bayern Munich vs. Auckland City territory, but it also didn’t feel as if we’d be too far away. Talking of Bayern, if Vincent Kompany’s men can get past Flamengo, they’ll meet PSG in a blockbuster quarterfinal. Thanks for joining us.
90 mins: Busquets gets back to block a Dembele shot behind. There’ll be two added minutes.
88 mins: Messi rams it into the wall. Ah, well.
87 mins: Now then, Beraldo brings down Suarez on the edge of the D. You know who’ll fancy this…
80 mins: Messi wants to bow out with a goal and goes close here, steering a downward header that Donnarumma pats away.
79′ MESSI! A strong header but Donnarumma is there again!

79 mins: Messi flicks one through to Suarez but Beraldo gets across to snuff out the danger.
76 mins: On comes Inter Miami youth product Ben Cremaschi for Segovia.
74 mins: Suarez gets himself involved in some nonsense and is booked for raging against the dying of the light.
70 mins: Luis Enrique brings his fullbacks off, with Hakimi and Neves making way for Kang-in Lee and Lucas Hernandez. Doue cuts inside from the corner and lashes wide of the far post.
69 mins: Barcola’s shot is deflected over and ripples the top of the netting. A fifth goal feels imminent.
66 mins: Dembele lofts a gorgeous ball over the PSG defence. Hakimi has the run on Alba but can’t finish.
64 mins: Kvaratskhelia cuts inside to shoot but this one is fairly harmlessly over.
63 mins: Messi has Inter’s first shot on target in the 63rd minute.
62 mins: Neves departs to an appreciative ovation and on comes Dembele for his first action of the tournament. More tremendous news for Inter Miami.
60 mins: Messi looks like he might have a chance to turn and shoot on the edge of the box but he has four PSG shirts swarming around him and Zaire-Emery makes the challenge.
58 mins: Ohhhhhh, dreamy stuff from Barcola, who spins the embattled Aviles with a delightful touch from Neves’ pass. Ustari turns the shot over. From the corner, Barcola can’t get his header on target.
57 mins: PSG dominating still but with understandably less urgency in possession. Doue lines one up from distance and Ustariu gets behind it.
49 mins: Oh, that’s a huge chance for Suarez! Messi stuns a sensational volleyed pass over the PSG defence for Suarez, whose poor first touch means he can’t test Donnarumma. He should really have tried to finish first time.
Kickoff: 2nd Half
We’re back underway and PSG boss Luis Enrique has the luxury of being able to make a couple of changes. Zaire-Emery and Beraldo on for Ruiz and Marquinhos.
Halftime
Hard to imagine how that could have been much worse for Inter. Messi has been a virtual spectator. PSG look ready to lay on plenty more pain in the second half. They won’t even tire in the heat as we’re playing under a roof in an air-conditioned stadium. All the very best to Javier Mascherano for this team talk.
45+3 mins: GOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!!! Achraf Hakimi!!!!
Somewhere in the distant past, Jordi Alba has no problem with that run from Barcola. In 2025, the veteran full-back is nowhere near the PSG winger, whose low cross finds Hakimi. The right-back’s first shot is deflected agaisnt the cross bar before he slots home the rebound. This is a turkey shoot.
45′ HAKIMMMMMI!
It’s 4-0 and @PSG_English are flying!

45 mins: Three added minute until Inter Miami can escape to the sancturary of the dressing room.
44 mins: GOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!!! Tomas Aviles (OG)!!!!
Doue gets into space down the right and whips in a wicked cross that riccochets off Aviles and into his own net. This could be any score.
42 mins: Weigandt clumps into Mendes to get a hard-earned and probably overdue booking.
39 mins: GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!! Joao Neves!!!
We can’t say it hasn’t been coming. Barcola retrieves the ball high up, slots a pass through to Ruiz, who duly squares for Neves to tap in his second. Training ground stuff and, you’d think, game over.
34 mins: Nuno Mendes tears into the Inter box to receive a crossfield ball, rounds Ustari and sees Falcon clear off the line. The offside flag then goes up. Even so, it’s implausible this is still only 1-0. The gulf in quality is huge.
31 mins: Ruiz crashes a shot just over from the edge of the box after a delicious dummy from Doue. At the other end, Suarez crashes into Marquinhos, maybe just to feel something.
28 mins: Kvaratskhelia takes Weigandt to the cleaners again, could have gone down when he was clipped. He wins a corner that Miami make a better fist of defending.
26 mins: Neves appears to be unmarked again but Vitinha works it short and Mendes’s rasping drive is blocked.
25 mins: A chance for Inter to attack, with Messi the orchestrator. Allende llosk to play into the box but it’s blocked for a throw-in. From there, the ball is turned over, PSG dart forward and Kvaratskhelia wins a free-kick in a similar position to where they scored the first goal.
23 mins: Ohhhhhh, Kvaratskhelia so close to 2-0! The Georgian superstar cuts inside and wraps his right foot around a trademark effort that skims just wide of Ustari’s left post. I’m not sure he was getting there.
21 mins: Beautiful chip over the top of the Inter defence from Ruiz ends with Hakimi having a shit blocked behind. Busquets half-clears after Doue works the short corner and then the offside flag goes up.
20 mins: Straight away Aviles thunders into a tackle and is booked. That means he will miss the quarterfinal if Inter get there. Admittedly, that doesn’t seem like a matter of huge concern right now.
19 mins: Further woes for the Inter Miami defence as Allen is forced off through injury. Aviles into the fray.
15 mins: Ruiz has the ball in the net but he was offside when he converted Barcola’s nod back across goal. Inter all at sea from that set-piece. This is a total mismatch right now.
9 mins: Inter remain under siege. They don’t seem to know where to look, who to pick up from this fluid PSG front three, while Ruiz, Vitinha and the goalscorer Neves are into their irresistable rhythm.
6 mins: GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!! Joao Neves!!!
Far too easy for PSG. Vitinha floats a free-kick in from the left and Neves ghosts in unmarked at the back post to bury a diving header.
4 mins: Fabulous save from Ustari! Inter’s goalkeeper can expect to be busy and he’s quickly into his work. Kvaratskhelia glides through challenges into the box and cuts the ball back to Barcola. Ustari is tumbling in the wrong direction but saves with his boot.
Kickoff: 1st Half
PSG get us underway with their now-familiar kickoff of smashing the ball deep into opposition territory. However, Neves has misjudged this one and it sails away for a goal kick rather than a throw-in.
5 mins before kickoff: The teams are going through this competition’s mildly irritating one-by-one introductions. We’ll be underway soon.
30 mins before kickoff: French sports daily L’Equipe astonishingly took aim at Inter Miami’s star man with its front page on the eve of this match. “Messi…not all is forgiven” it read. PSG’s post-galacticos win over Inter Milan in the Champions League final perhaps means there is more license to take a few swings at Messi’s forgettable period in the French capital. But… you wouldn’t want to make him angry, would you?

1 hour before kickoff: The teams are in and all of Inter’s Barcelona old-stagers are present and correct. Messi starts alongside Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets – all key members of Luis Enrique’s 2014/15 treble-winning side. Bradley Barcola completes the PSG front three alongside Khavicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue. Aside from Barcola accounting Ousmane Dembele’s ongoing absence, it’s the familiar XI that romped through the closing stages of the Champions League.
1 hr 30 mins before kickoff: Messi spent two season with PSG before joining Inter Miami. It was a famously unhappy period for the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, who might feel he has a point or two to prove today.

2 hours before kickoff. Hello and welcome to the Sporting News’ live coverage of Paris Saint-Germain vs. Inter Miami. Surely Luis Enrique’s European champions have far too much for their MLS foes, but let’s not discount the Lionel Messi factor entirely.

PSG vs. Inter Miami lineups, team news
Star forward Ousmane Dembele continues to train alone and it’s unclear when he will return to action for PSG. He has yet to appear in the Club World Cup after suffering a thigh injury. Bradley Barcola sat out the first match due to knee discomfort but has returned to serve as a bench option and starts here.
Luis Enrique hardly rotated his side at all in the group finale against Seattle Sounders, and Dembele is the only member of the Champions League final XI who isn’t present and correct here.
PSG (4-3-3, right to left): 1. Gianluigi Donnarumma (GK) — 2. Achraf Hakimi, 5. Marquinhos, 51. Willian Pacho, 25. Nuno Mendes — 8, Fabian Ruiz, 17. Vitinha, 87. Joao Neves — 7. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, 29. Bradley Barcola, 14. Desire Doue
While Inter Miami have built their team around Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, the rest of the attack has been overhauled around them. New signings Taedo Allende and Telasco Segovia have exploded to life this tournament on the wings, while MLS veteran Fafa Picault is a plus bench option having rejoined the side after playing internationally for Haiti before the Club World Cup began.
Starting goalkeeper Drake Callender has been dealing with a hernia for months and is unlikely to participate in this competition at all after having surgery. Backup Oscar Ustari recovered from a precautionary exit from a late May MLS game and will continue in goal after starring in the team’s first two matches.
Jordi Alba returned after missing the opener with a hamstring injury, but has only been fit enough for the bench in the final two group games. He’s back in here, completing the ex-Barcelona quartet alongside Sergio Busquets.
Inter Miami (4-4-2, right to left): 19. Oscar Ustari (GK) — 57. Marcelo Weigandt, 32. Noah Allen, 37, Maximiliano Falcon, 18. Jordi Alba — 21. Tadeo Allende, 5. Sergio Busquets, 55. Federico Redondo, 8. Telasco Segovia — 9. Luis Suarez, 10. Lionel Messi
