PSG president claims Club World Cup defeat is ‘good’ for next season

Paris Saint-Germain suffered a crushing defeat against Chelsea in the final of the Club World Cup on July 13 at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Chelsea found the back of the net thrice to claim the win, while PSG were unable to open their scoring and missed out on lifting their fifth trophy of the 2024/25 season.

PSG had an impressive run in the last campaign, where they claimed the Ligue 1 title and their first-ever Champions League title, and the French side exhibited the same stride in the Club World Cup. They won five out of their six matches in the competition prior to the final.

Following their disheartening loss, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi appreciated the team’s efforts and achievements in the campaign, while putting a positive spin on their missing out on the Club World Cup trophy.

What did PSG president say about the Club World Cup final defeat?

During the post-match press conference, Al-Khelaifi heaped praise on the French squad while claiming that the defeat was ‘good’ for them as they have to be ‘humble.’

“We can be very proud of what we’ve achieved this season. We wanted to win this Club World Cup, but it’s difficult. The players gave their all. They were tired. We had a great season, the best in the club’s history. We’re proud of the players and the staff,” as per GOAL.

“This defeat is good for us, for next season. We have to be humble. We are the youngest team in the competition. It’s true that we lost a final, but I’m proud of the team. And congratulations to Chelsea, they deserved their victory.”

Ahead of their opening game in the 2025/26 Ligue 1 on August 17, PSG will have another shot at winning some silverware in their match against Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Super Cup on August 13.
