PSG bid emotional farewell to Gigio Donnarumma after Man City move

Gianluigi Donnarumma arrived at PSG in 2021 as Europe’s most promising young goalkeeper and four years later, he leaves as one of the club’s most decorated, having played 161 matches and lifting 10 trophies.

The Italian’s defining contribution came in last season’s Champions League run where his contribution between the posts carried PSG to their first European crown.

But football moves fast and just weeks after lifting silverware, Donnarumma found himself on the outside when he was left out of the UEFA Super Cup squad against Tottenham with manager Luis Enrique entrusting new signing Lucas Chevalier for the starting role.

The decision prompted the Italian to vent his frustration on his social media -“Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team’s success,” Donnarumma posted.

“I am disappointed and disheartened.”

Manchester City have now secured the services of the Italian for a reported £26m [$34m], signing a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium, with the option for an additional year, and he arrives as the direct replacement for Ederson, who joined Fenerbahce for £12m [$16m].
