The Boston Red Sox have three major problems to figure out this offseason: finding a righty hitter, a second baseman, and a backend reliever. With this proposed signing, two of those problems can be answered, at least for the short-term. The Sox should sign Ha-Seong Kim to a one-year deal, and deliver long-term next offseason.
This past season, Kim hit .233/.330/.370/.700, with 16 doubles and 11 home runs. He also has a career .270 average and .788 OPS against lefties.
Kim is also a great defender, winning the coveted Gold Glove in 2023 at the utility spot, since he played second, shortstop, and third base.
For the Red Sox, this could be their answer, at least until next offseason. They get a righty hitter who’s a stellar defender to play the position they’ve been trying to fill for years. And if he overperforms, extend him. If he underperforms, the rookies in Vaughn Grissom and Kristian Campbell should both be given shots, since they could solve both problems as well.
Here’s hoping the Sox somehow get a superstar, but if this happens, it could be considered another win for the Sox offseason.
Ha-Seong Kim to Boston on a one-year deal would be really interesting to me. He gets to prove he’s healthy and provides an RH bat + solid defense, and if he isn’t healthy or sucks, you have a ton of options in Triple-A ready to step up. Feels like a win-win.
