Proposed Eagles-Panthers trade sends $8.5 million wide receiver to Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Eagles reached the top of the NFL world in 2024, successfully defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

Now, the team has spent the offseason trying to retool the roster to prepare for another run at the crown in 2025. Even though the team didn’t have a ton of cap space to work with, the Eagles were able to re-sign key linebacker Zack Baun and bring in solid pieces like edge-rusher Azeez Ojulari and running back A.J. Dillon.

However, the offseason veteran additions may not be done just yet. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report recently identified some wide receivers who could soon be traded, and Knox has the Eagles as a logical landing spot for one of these pass-catchers.

Knox identified the Eagles as a realistic candidate to trade for Carolina Panthers wide receiver Adam Thielen. Here’s a look at the deal Knox proposes, along with his thoughts on it:

  • Philadelphia Eagles get: WR Adam Thielen
  • Carolina Panthers get: 2025 fifth-round pick

“Thielen, who will turn 35 in August, would be a logical target for two types of teams: those ready to contend now, and those looking to pair a young quarterback with a savvy veteran,” Knox wrote. “The Philadelphia Eagles could fall into the first category. Though Philly traded for Jahan Dotson last offseason, they’re still searching for a reliable third receiver behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. New Eagles passing game coordinator Parks Frazier also coached Thielen as Carolina’s passing game coordinator in 2023.”

Knox suggests that Thielen could be had for the price of a fifth-round selection, and that’s a price the Eagles would likely be fine with paying for a reliable WR3.

In 2024, Thielen caught 48 passes for 615 yards and five touchdowns. The veteran only played in 10 games due to some nagging injuries, but Thielen still showcased the elite route-running ability and sure hands that have kept him in the league for so long.

Overall, Thielen has earned two Pro Bowl selections and has surpassed 900 yards in five of his 11 NFL seasons. The receiver surpassed 1,000 yards as recently as 2023, when he caught 103 passes for the Panthers.

In Philadelphia, Thielen could slot in behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Jahan Dotson is currently penciled in as the WR3, but Dotson failed to impress in 2024, catching just 19 passes for 216 yards.

Thielen is set to make $8.5 million in 2025 before entering free agency next offseason. Over the Cap has the Eagles sitting at around $22 million in cap space, so the team could easily bring in Thielen’s contract.
