The Boston Red Sox have already made a pair of trades this week, acquiring starting pitcher Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox and catcher Carlos Narvaez from the New York Yankees.
However, the Red Sox still have more needs to fill, so there’s a chance another trade is just around the corner.
Earlier this week, former Red Sox pitcher Jake Peavy suggested Boston make a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals to land third baseman Nolan Arenado. In return, St. Louis would receive right-handed pitcher Richard Fitts, designated hitter Masataka Yoshida and outfield prospect Miguel Bleis.
The Red Sox have been rumored to be in on Arenado, so the connection isn’t coming out of nowhere.
The eight-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner has dipped off a bit at the plate last year (hitting .272 with a .719 OPS, 16 home runs and 71 RBIs in 152 games), but he’d be a significant improvement over Rafael Devers at third base.
However, to this point, Boston has stayed strong that they’re not moving Devers off of his position. If that’s the case, the trade doesn’t much sense.
While Yoshida has flamed out quickly with the Red Sox, the contract is less expensive than Arenado’s, so that will help the Cardinals. They’d also get Boston’s No. 9 and No. 12 prospects (which will both move up three spots after the Crochet trade), according to Sox Prospects.
There are benefits for both sides of this suggested trade, but it would just a question of whether or not St. Louis gets offered a better package.
