Premier League star at crossroads drops Newcastle United hint

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is on the brink of a major career decision, one that could see him move away from Goodison Park. The Everton striker, who will become a free agent on June 30, has dropped his clearest signal yet that he wants Champions League football, something Newcastle United can offer.

Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, Calvert-Lewin revealed: “I want to be in a winning environment. The last three or four seasons it has been about survival… I haven’t played in the Champions League.”

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has long admired the England international and even attempted to bring him to Tyneside last summer but wasn’t able to.

However, the striker’s situation has shifted. With no new contract signed as of yet, Calvert-Lewin could walk for free, giving him power in wage and signing bonus negotiations.

In his own words: “There are still things I would like to achieve before my time is done. To have the opportunity to decide potentially where that place will be… Then that would be the return of me to the England team and playing in the Champions League.”

Calvert-Lewin’s 2024–25 season was injury-hit, he made 26 appearances and scored three goals, missing several months. But Howe still sees value in him, especially with Callum Wilson’s Newcastle future uncertain.

The Times reports that talks over a new Everton contract have stalled. Still, Everton reiterated: “We continue to liaise with representatives of Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the current deals… expiring at the end of June.”

Everton boss David Moyes had previously said: “Undoubtedly he’s got qualities other strikers don’t have… We need him to be ready to train, play, be competitive in more games than he’s been available for.”

If no agreement is reached by month’s end, Calvert-Lewin becomes available without a fee. That would ease financial pressure for Newcastle and open a path for a deal based solely on personal terms.

In any case, the striker has made his ambitions clear. “My representation of that is the Champions League, World Cups, Euros, getting into that bracket of elite players,” he said.
