Premier League newcomers agree deal to sign Chelsea star on loan

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Premier League newcomers Sunderland have agreed a deal to sign Marc Guiu on loan from Chelsea next season.

The teenage striker is set to become the Black Cats’ ninth signing of the ongoing summer transfer window.

Guiu will spend the whole of next season at the Stadium of Light after Chelsea agreed a straight one-year loan deal, without any clause for a permanent deal at the end of the loan arrangement.

The Spaniard is a product of Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy and made his debut for the Spanish giants in October 2023, where he scored with his second touch against Athletic Bilbao.

He joined Chelsea in the summer of 2024, but made just seven senior starts for the Blues last season, all of which came in cup competitions.

His route to Chelsea’s first team has been blocked even further this summer due to the arrival of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro at Stamford Bridge.

Why a move to Sunderland makes sense for Guiu

At this point in time, Guiu needs to be at a club where he is guaranteed to play regular football so that he can get some invaluable experience of playing at the highest level.

The fact that Chelsea have not included an option to buy in his loan deal proves that they do see a future for the player at Stamford Bridge, and he will most likely return to Chelsea at the end of the season.

At Sunderland, the Spaniard is almost certain to be a starter under their manager Regis Le Bris. The manager’s only other options up front are Eliezer Mayenda and Wilson Isidor, neither of whom has any experience of playing in the Premier League.

With the addition of Guiu to their ranks, Sunderland do look like a side that could compete to stay in the Premier League.
