Ever since Triston Casas went down with a season-ending injury, first base has been a question mark that the Boston Red Sox need to address.
Boston’s opening at first base has already led to more drama with Rafael Devers, yet the team hasn’t found a permanent solution at first base. The Red Sox have given Kristian Campbell practice reps at first, but have been splitting time at first between Abraham Toro and Nick Sogard.
With the Red Sox’s losses adding up, Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer suggested that the team make a trade with division rival Baltimore Orioles for Ryan Mountcastle.
“It otherwise isn’t too soon for Breslow to scan the market for infield upgrades,” Rymer wrote. “In Ryan Mountcastle and Ryan O’Hearn, the equally disappointing Baltimore Orioles have two potential replacements for Casas at first base. Breslow should also call the Colorado Rockies about Ryan McMahon, an ace third baseman with experience at first.”
“The goal at this point is not 95-plus wins. That ship has sailed. But as the Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies can vouch, even 80-something wins can get you to the World Series if your roster gets good enough care put into it.”

Mountcastle is slashing .246/.280/.628 this season with two home runs and 15 RBIs. The 28-year-old first baseman is on a one-year deal, so the Sox could add him in Casas’ absence until he returns. Boston is set to start Campbell at first base for the first time this Sunday, but if that doesn’t work out, bringing in an outside option like Mountcastle could be a good move for the Red Sox.
