Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly eyeing New England Patriots cut candidate

The Pittsburgh Steelers need a wide receiver, so chances are they’re going to be keeping an eye on several rosters and players with NFL cutdown day coming.

One of those players is reportedly New England Patriots wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk, according to Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan.

“Source: Steelers have done some homework on Patriots WR Ja’Lynn Polk,” he wrote. “He’s likely to get cut in (New England). He was the 37th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. An intriguing player to trade a 7th rounder for or claim off waivers.”

The Patriots cutting Polk would be a quick hook, but a quick scan of 53-man roster projections for New England shows it’s a realistic possibility.

Polk was very disappointing in his first season on a Patriots team that was desperate for anyone to step up at wide receiver. He finished with just 12 catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns in 15 games (seven starts).

The Steelers have three roster locks at wide receiver in DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin and Roman Wilson, but it’s anyone’s ballgame after that. Robert Woods was once thought to be at least a near-lock, but how his snaps were divvied up in the last preseason game says differently.

Given his lack of success in the NFL thus far, the Steelers should be aiming much higher than Polk.

However, if all else fails and Pittsburgh isn’t comfortable with its group of wide receivers, it wouldn’t hurt to take a flyer on the former second-round pick.
