With the preseason in the books, the Pittsburgh Steelers are now turning their attention to trimming the roster down to 53 players.
The roster cutdown deadline is on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 4 p.m. ET, and after that teams will be scouring the waiver wire to fill holes with players cut by other teams.
But with days to go before that, the Steelers have already begun the process. The team announced on Friday it has waived 11 players. Here’s the list:
- QB: Logan Woodside
- RB: Evan Hull
- TE: Kevin Foelsch
- OL: Doug Nester, Julian Pearl
- LB: Kenny Willekes
- DB: Kam Alexander, Quindell Johnson, Kyler McMichael, Mikey Victor
- LS: Jake McQuaide
No surprises from that group, but the move to part ways with long snapper Jake McQuaide is significant because it signifies that fellow long snapper Christian Kuntz is going to be ready for the start of the season.
Kuntz suffered a chest injury in the preseason Week 2 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and while reports suggested he could be out for “several weeks to months,” Kuntz made it clear he expects to be ready for Week 1.
“After practice Kuntz told Steelers Now that the injury is painful, but said he’s confident he’ll be able to return for Week 1,” Alan Saunders reported.
Bear in mind, the group on Aug. 26 will just be the initial 53-man roster, as the Steelers will make more moves before the start of the regular season.
Pittsburgh opens up its 2025 campaign on the road against the New York Jets on Sept. 7.
