The Philadelphia Phillies got a scare this weekend. Ace right-handed pitcher Zack Wheeler went onto the injured list with a blood clot in his right (throwing) shoulder.
On Monday, the Phillies provided an update.
Via The Athletic’s Matt Gelb:
“Zack Wheeler underwent a thrombolysis procedure to remove a blood clot in his right upper extremity this morning, the Phillies said. His timeline for recovery is ‘to be determined.'”

The NL East leaders can afford to be patient with Wheeler, especially with an injury like this one. But it’s a big blow until Wheeler can potentially get back onto the mound.
The 35-year old is having one of his best MLB seasons.
Wheeler was an All Star, and he has now made 24 starts on the campaign. He has a 2.71 ERA and 195 strikeouts in 149.2 innings pitched.
The 195 strikeouts by Wheeler are tops in the National League.

Wheeler has now been in Philadelphia for six seasons. In five of those seasons, including this one, his ERA has been below 3.00.
He’s one of baseball’s most consistently excellent pitchers. And he rarely misses extended time, either.
This will be a trying time for the Phillies and Wheeler as they navigate the next steps of a scary injury.
It seems like they’re moving forward, though, and Philadelphia fans will hope that things stay positive moving forward.
