Phillies-Red Sox trade pitch brings Alex Bregman to Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Phillies have a chance to pull away from the New York Mets in the National League East. They could swing a blockbuster trade to make it happen.

The Phillies reportedly shopped Alec Bohm in the offseason, and he will be a free agent after next season. His OPS is down significantly from last season, when he was an All-Star. The Athletic’s Jim Bowden noted that the Boston Red Sox could try and trade Alex Bregman if the two sides cannot reach an agreement on an extension before the trade deadline. Bregman is reportedly expected to opt out of his three-year, $120 million deal after this season.

The Phillies’ offense could use a boost, and Bregman could be the player to provide it, according to Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer. He proposed this trade to bring Bregman to Philadelphia:

  • Phillies receive: 3B Alex Bregman
  • Red Sox receive: RHP Taijuan Walker, 3B Alec Bohm and RHP Mick Abel

The Red Sox would essentially be punting on the season if they traded Bregman. In return, they would get an All-Star third baseman with another year of control, a young pitcher with multiple years of control to slot in behind Garrett Crochet in the rotation and an All-Star pitcher in Walker.

Bregman was slashing .299/.385/.553 before his quad injury. He had 11 home runs and was having one of his best seasons at the plate. If the Red Sox start contract negotiations and realize the two sides are too far apart to even get something done in the offseason, they may be willing to trade him for a haul.
