Phillies predicted to dump $8.1 million All-Star by 2025 trade deadline

The 2024 season ended on a bitter note for all of the Philadelphia Phillies players, but especially for their first-time All-Star third baseman.

Alec Bohm looked to be fully breaking out after leading Major League Baseball in doubles in the first half of the season. But after a second-half slump and unceremonious benching in the National League Division Series, his future in Philadelphia isn’t totally secure.

Bohm’s name has been floating in trade rumors all winter, and there have been reports of teams like the Athletics and Seattle Mariners engaging in preliminary talks with the Phillies. However, manager Rob Thomson did his best to shut those rumors down, claiming Bohm wasn’t being shopped.

The question isn’t whether or not the Phillies are actively looking to move Bohm, though–it’s whether he actually ends up getting traded. And one Phillies writer seems to be sold on the idea that eventually, it will wind up happening.

Earlier this week, Jovan Alford of FanSided predicted that the Phillies would move Bohm no later than the 2025 MLB trade deadline.

“Bohm might not be on the roster if there was a deal to be had that would help the Phillies this offseason,” Alford wrote. “Given the lack of talent at third base in free agency outside of Alex Bregman, the Phillies believe Bohm is at least part of their plans for the start of the 2025 season.”

“But at the same time, if Bohm fails to not drive in runs and doesn’t have competitive at-bats, it would not be shocking to see the team part ways by the trade deadline, if a third base upgrade is available.”

With a .280/.332/.448 overall slash line, 19 home runs and 95 RBI, Bohm still ended the year with solid overall numbers. But at an offensive position like third base, especially with Bohm’s mediocre defense, that doesn’t equate to an impact star, but rather a solid starter.

Bohm is estimated for an $8.1 million salary this season in arbitration (per Spotrac) and is under team control for two more years. That gives the Phillies ample time to trade him if they feel the move is necessary–though they could try to strike sooner to increase the return.
