Phillies might cut ties with 27-year-old fan favorite, per insider

It’s an uncomfortable time of year for many players around Major League Baseball, and that’s especially true for some of the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Phillies are in win-now mode, with superstars like Bryce Harper and Zack Wheeler entering their mid-thirties. That means if you’re a Phillies player and you’re underperforming, you know you could be replaced at any moment.

Philadelphia’s outfield has been an area of relative weakness for several seasons now, and it’s hitting a breaking point in 2025. Nick Castellanos has been above average and gets paid a lot, so he’s not going anywhere, but the rest of the outfielders should have their heads on swivels.

That means for the second straight year, Philadelphia fan favorite Brandon Marsh will be a name that gets a decent amount of buzz at the trade deadline.

On Thursday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic wrote a deadline preview in which he mentioned that Marsh could be a trade candidate, due to “indications” that Philadelphia may want to give top outfield prospect Justin Crawford a look in a starting role.

“Marsh, in particular, could interest someone. He has two years of club control after 2025. He’s probably a better fit in left field. He has chipped away after a nightmarish start to his season,” wrote Gelb.

“Marsh is hitting .315/.379/.441 since May 1. The Phillies could use him to secure a better fit for their roster — either a right-handed bat, a swing-and-miss setup man, or a prospect to help backfill whatever the Phillies ship out this month.”

Marsh, 27, has been an integral part of the Phillies’ locker room since arriving in 2022 via trade, and he’s also been a pretty solid hitter against right-handed pitchers. But if the Phillies feel he’s replaceable and he can net them a decent prospect, it doesn’t seem outlandish to suggest he could be moved.

At the very least, Marsh and the Phillies both have reasons to hope his hot streak continues.
