Phillies eye blockbuster trade for 2-time All-Star closer as bullpen struggles

The Philadelphia Phillies have posted a winning record so far in the 2025 campaign, but they’ll have to make some improvements if they want to reach the World Series.

After just one playoff win in 2024, the pressure is on for the team to win a championship with Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Zack Wheeler and company. But sitting at 14-13, well behind the New York Mets in the division, the Phillies have a clear roster issue.

The team lost high-leverage relievers Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez in free agency over the winter and brought in Jordan Romano, who has posted a 13.50 ERA in 9.1 innings so far. The team’s bullpen has Major League Baseball’s second-highest ERA at 5.46.

As a result, the front office is eyeing the trade market for a blockbuster reinforcement.

“The Philadelphia Phillies, among other teams, already are keeping a close eye on Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley, who will likely be dealt by the trade deadline,” Bob Nightengale reported for USA Today.

Helsley is earning $8.2 million in his final arbitration year with the St. Louis Cardinals, who are embarking on a rebuild around some younger and more controllable talent. He posted an MLB-best 49 saves in 2024, making the second All-Star team of his career.

So far in 2025, Helsley has a 3.60 ERA with four saves across 10 innings, which is not quite up to his recent standard. But if he re-establishes himself as a lights-out closer as the trade deadline nears, he will be highly sought by contending teams.

While the Cardinals could command a haul for Helsley, Nightengale added that there are a pair of Phillies prospects who would be untouchable in a deal.

“Yet, the Phillies are adamant they will not include top prospects Andrew Painter or Aidan Miller in any trade,” Nightengale added.

As the Phillies’ relief corps continue to struggle, it seems reinforcement is on the top of the priority list. Helsley could, eventually, serve as a critical arm in a high-stakes playoff run.
