Phillies Cy Young candidate Zack Wheeler placed on 15-day IL, unclear on timetable for return

The Philadelphia Phillies have been having a great season, leading the NL East. However, they might have just had the biggest setback of the season.

Zack Wheeler, the ace of the Phillies and a Cy Young candidate, was just put on the Injured list, per MLB insider Jeff Passan.

“Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler was placed on the 15-day injured list with a blood clot near his right shoulder. The timetable for his return is unclear,” Passan wrote.

This is not good for Philadelphia. In his 2025 Cy Young campaign, Wheeler had a 10-5 record, a 2.71 ERA, 195 strikeouts, and an amazing WHIP of .935.

Blood clots are a serious issue, as many athletes across all sports that have had them miss plenty of time, or had their entire careers derailed. Hopefully for Wheeler, the latter isn’t true.

But the Phillies will have to face the fact that Wheeler might be done for the season. If so, they’ll need a new guy in the rotation, and guys like Christopher Sanchez and Ranger Suarez pick up the slack.

Wheeler now joins Aaron Nola, the Phillies veteran starter, on the IL. Hopefully Wheeler has a quick recovery, so he can still be eligible for the playoffs.
