Phillies biggest trade need could be filled by AL East All-Star

The Philadelphia Phillies have relied on Brandon Marsh in centerfield in recent years.

A slow start this season, and a less-than-perfect defensive record, mean Marsh might not be the solution in CF if the Phillies want to contend for a World Series.

The good news is that multiple centerfielders could wind up on the trade market as the season goes along.

One target, writes Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller, should be Baltimore’s Cedric Mullins.

“Mullins could be an intriguing option,” writes Miller. “He’s in his final season before hitting free agency for the first time, and the Orioles have a bit of a logjam of hitters deserving of regular playing time. They don’t even need to fall out of contention in order to consider moving him at the deadline.”

Mullins, 30, was an AL All-Star back in 2021 and has been a productive big leaguer for the past five seasons.

So far in 2025, Mullins is batting .295 with four doubles, three home runs and 16 RBI.

Last season, Mullins stole 32 bases and slugged 18 homers.

Mullins used to be a switch-hitter, but he gave that up before his big 2021 season and now bats exclusively from the left side.

Given that Mullins’ contract expires at the end of this season, he wouldn’t cost the Phillies a huge prospect price. If the Orioles remain in contention, they may want an MLB piece in return, anyway.

For Philadelphia, acquiring Mullins would be worth whatever middling cost it takes.
