The Philadelphia Phillies’ bullpen struggles so far this season have been discussed ad nauseam, but the good news is they still have three months to fix them.
Jordan Romano hasn’t worked out in the closer role, and José Alvarado, though he’s five-for-five in save opportunities so far, has an uneven career track record. It would be no surprise to see the Phillies pursue a more experienced closer at the trade deadline.
Last season, the Phillies nabbed closer Carlos Estévez from the Los Angeles Angels at the deadline, and the veteran righty was very good in Philadelphia–right up until he gave up the grand slam to Francisco Lindor that sunk the Phillies’ postseason battleship.
Could history repeat in 2024? One Phillies writer believes the Angels could be open for business yet again,
In a recent article, Matt Grazel of FanSided named Angels four-time All-Star closer Kenley Jansen as a potential trade fit for the Phillies before the Jul. 31 deadline.
“Jansen has been perfect for Los Angeles, saving six out of six games and not allowing a run in eight appearances. The veteran has an extensive track record of being one of the top closers for over a decade,” Grazel wrote.

“Jansen also has playoff experience, appearing in 59 games, primarily with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He’s 20-for-24 in postseason save opportunities. Philadelphia should have the veteran on their radar, especially if he continues to be among the best closers near the trade deadline.”
Jansen, 37, may no longer be the dominant force he was earlier in his career, but he’s still an above-average major league closer with the chops to pitch in the biggest moments imaginable. Plus, he ranks fourth on the all-time saves list with 453.
If the crafty veteran keeps up his strong performance this season (no runs allowed through eight innings), he’ll have plenty of suitors.
The Phillies would then have to give up a sizable prospect haul, which they could be tempted to do if they feel this year is their last chance to win a title with this current veteran core.
