Pep Guardiola slams Man United fans for ‘lack of class’ over Phil Foden chants: ‘They should be ashamed’

OLD TRAFFORD, MANCHESTER — Pep Guardiola condemned misogynistic chanting by Manchester United fans aimed at the mother of Phil Foden during Sunday’s derby match.

The 196th encounter between the two Manchester clubs ended in a dour goalless draw, a result that did few favours for City in their bid to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season.

Foden spurned one of his team’s better chances early in the second half but was substituted before the hour on another disappointing outing in what has been a lacklustre campaign for the 2023/24 PFA and FWA Player of the Year.

But the afternoon was marred by a section of United supporters chanting “Phil Foden, you mum is a s**g!” at various points during the match.

What Pep Guardiola said about Phil Foden’s Mum chants

Speaking at his post-match news conference, Guardiola said: “[It’s a] lack of class. But it’s not United, it’s the people, you know.

“We are so exposed in the [media] in world football – managers, owners, and football players especially.

“Honestly, I don’t understand the mind of the people involving the mum of Phil. It’s a lack of integrity, class, and they should be ashamed.”

Phil Foden record for Man City vs. Man United

Although Foden proved ineffective during Sunday’s match, he has scored six goals in the fixture, including three across two matches last season.

The 24-year-old also scored a hat-trick in a 6-3 derby win at the Etihad Stadium in September 2022.

Those performances will be part of the motivation for a minority of United fans to single him and his family out for abuse.

Foden is famously a lifelong City fan and was a ballboy at the Etihad Stadium during his youth.
