Manchester City were on the receiving end of a 2-0 loss against Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium in their second Premier League game of the 2025/26 season.
Tottenham’s second goal came from a partial error by Man City goalkeeper James Trafford, which raised questions about the 22-year-old’s role in Pep Guardiola’s starting squad. Speaking ahead of their upcoming league match, the Catalan manager backed the club graduate and said,
“Always they have the arms on their shoulders, always. They don’t believe it, but we take care of them. Impossible [it] would be better. What happened don’t belong just to James. It’s not easy to say but don’t belong just to James to change what happened in the second goal against the Spurs,” as per Manchester Evening News.
“He has a huge personality. Of course he’s concerned, I would not like it if he is not concerned, but of course we are here to help them.”
Questions have also surfaced about who is Man City’s first-choice goalkeeper for this season, considering Ederson has not made an appearance yet. The Brazilian shot-stopper has been heavily linked with a move away from the English side, with several reports suggesting Galatasaray are keen on acquiring his signature.
When asked about his plans in front of the goal for Man City, Guardiola admitted that he is yet to make the decision, and ‘it depends on many reasons.’

What did Man City boss Pep Guardiola say?
Guardiola stated that ‘everything is possible’ till the transfer window is closed, and City will be able to reach a decision after their matches in September.
“In this part of the season before [the] international transfer window is closed, everything is possible. So it’s simple as that. After that, we’re going to play United and Champions League and Arsenal, after that everything will be more clear and we take a decision. It depends on the performance and it depends on many reasons.”
Guardiola & Co. are set to make the trip to the American Express Stadium to face Brighton & Hove Albion on August 31.
