Pep Guardiola praises Man City star in comeback win

Manchester City went down early against Swansea in the Carabao Cup after a 12th-minute Goncalo Franco goal.

Pep Guardiola’s side responded through a Jeremy Doku goal before halftime, and later with goals from Omar Marmoush and Rayan Cherki.

Guardiola was full of praise for Marmoush, who has only just returned from a knee injury suffered during the September international break with Egypt.

What did Guardiola say about Marmoush?

Marmoush scored his first goal of the season, which ended up being the winner against Swansea, sending City into the quarterfinals of the cup.

Speaking after the match, Guardiola said, “With him with that system, five in the back, with centre defenders around, with Erling, he knows perfectly how to be patient.

“How to be in small spaces, how to be consistent, to go to the runs in behind. We have incredibly good deliveries with Phil [Foden], especially with Rayan Cherki and, of course, Nico Gonzalez.”

Marmoush had a successful first season with City in the 2024/25 season, scoring seven Premier League goals for the club.

Guardiola continued, “It’s getting better and getting better. I’m happy for him more because a striker needs goals, and for his confidence, it will be important.

“He’s been injured a long time, and of course, playing in the position from Erling is important. We know in many games we need both, and having him back is so nice.”

Haaland has been City’s main man this season, but Guardiola believes that Marmoush can be influential alongside the Norwegian, with the manager set to play the pair together in the coming weeks.
