Despite their struggles this season, Manchester City finished third in the Premier League, securing a spot in the Champions League for next season in the process.
Amid their injury woes, Man City dropped points in the Premier League while getting eliminated from the EFL Cup, Champions League, and lastly, the FA Cup, missing out on all chances of bagging some silverware this season.
As the 2024-25 season comes to an end, Man City are expected to make some additions to their squad over the summer transfer window and return to stronger in the next campaign.
One cannot deny City’s drop in form came as a shock to most after they claimed the Premier League title for four consecutive seasons. Recently, head coach Pep Guardiola was asked by reporters about his side’s chances in the upcoming season.
What did Pep Guardiola say about Man City’s chances in Premier League next season?
Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy with 84 points this season. The Reds bagged 25 wins and only four losses in 38 matches, finishing 10 points ahead of second-place Arsenal and 13 points ahead of Man City.
When asked if Man City can defeat Liverpool to claim the Premier League title next term, Guardiola candidly admitted (comments via The Independent) that he cannot assure that, given the current difference between his side and the Reds.

“I don’t know. I never thought we would win six Premier League titles in seven years. But if you expect that I am going to tell you now that next season we are going to win the Premier League, you are wrong,” he said.
“Since I have arrived at this club, we have finished with 80-plus points and this season we have finished with 71 so that is miles away from our standards. And it has happened for many reasons,” added Guardiola.
The Catalan manager, however, mentioned that since they will be getting ‘another chance’ in the upcoming season, City ‘will look to prove’ themselves.
“Sport and football gives you another chance and we will look to prove ourselves. But we are miles away from Liverpool. That is the reality. I have a feeling next season will be better but I don’t know how we will react after the Club World Cup. We will be exhausted without a holiday before next season. We have to rise and increase our level otherwise we will not compete to fight for the titles. But if we are fit, we will try and we will be closer,” Guardiola concluded.
The FIFA Club World Cup is set to start on June 14, with the final scheduled for July 13. Man City’s first match in the competition is slated for June 18, against Moroccan club Wydad AC at Lincoln Financial Field, Pennsylvania.
