Pep Guardiola drops major injury update ahead of Manchester derby

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has delivered a mixed injury update ahead of Sunday’s derby clash with Manchester United.

The Etihad is set for another tense battle, but Guardiola’s squad news has already become the main talking point.

City enter the match under pressure after back-to-back defeats to Tottenham and Brighton. United sit just one point above them, meaning victory could flip the table and restore momentum for Guardiola’s men.

Last season, City failed to beat their neighbors in the league, and the memory of December’s 2-1 loss is still fresh.

The big question was always who would be fit in time. Some stars are back, but others remain sidelined.

What Pep Guardiola said?

Guardiola confirmed: “Omar [Marmoush] came from Egypt injured. Rayan Ait Nouri and Rayan Cherki are out. John Stones is a doubt but not a big issue. The rest are ok.”

Marmoush’s knee injury means he will miss not only the derby but also games against Napoli and Arsenal. Guardiola added: “We have to wait for tests but a few weeks I think. Before the international break he will be ready.”

Phil Foden, Josko Gvardiol, and Savinho, however, are available, giving City a timely boost. Stones’ situation is less clear.

He withdrew from the England squad earlier this month and remains a “doubtful starter” for Sunday.

Derby tension rises

Guardiola also touched on squad size, admitting: “I have 16 players now so it is easier than when I had 26.” The trimmed squad might simplify decisions, but it leaves little room for further injuries.

The Spaniard also praised Erling Haaland, saying: “I wouldn’t change Erling for anyone. I know him. I like him.” A reminder, perhaps, that in a derby this tight, one striker can make all the difference.
