Pep Guardiola criticizes La Liga clubs over lack of ‘patience’ for managers

Pep Guardiola took charge as head coach of Manchester City in 2016 and has since led the club to win 18 trophies, including their first-ever Champions League title.

In his ongoing nine-year managerial tenure at Etihad, the 2024-25 campaign marked to be the worst for Guardiola, where Man City had to settle for a third-place finish in the Premier League, the FA Community Shield, and no major trophies.

Guardiola has been candid about their underwhelming run in the season, with Man City making significant additions to their squad in the ongoing summer transfer window in preparation for the upcoming Club World Cup and season.

Now, speaking ahead of the competition, Guardiola has pointed out how Man City’s disappointing campaign did not affect his position as manager, which according to him would not have been the case in Spain.

What did Man City boss Pep Guardiola say?

Guardiola told DAZN (comments via ESPN) that if a similar run like Man City’s in the 2024-25 season happened if he was coaching a Spanish club, the Catalan manager would have been ‘sacked.’

“With the year we’ve had, if this were Spain, I wouldn’t be coaching in October, November or December. If this were Barca or Madrid, they would have sacked me. But here it wasn’t even a question. You have to have a little more patience,” said the Catalan manager.

Guardiola, then, gave the example of Real Madrid’s former head coach Carlo Ancelotti, who was dismissed last month after Los Blancos had a trophyless run.

“Look at Carlo Ancelotti. He won the Champions League and La Liga four days ago and now he’s off to coach in Brazil,” added Guardiola.

Guardiola’s current contract at the Etihad is valid until the summer of 2027. Man City are now preparing for their first match of the Club World Cup, which is slated for June 18, against Wydad AC, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
